With Black Friday almost upon us, Commercial Director of Switcher.ie Eoin Clarke shares his latest tips for consumers looking to secure the best deals:

—  Set your sites: Jot down specific items before you shop, with rough price estimates. Next list the sites you plan to visit in priority order. Remember to compare the final cost with your budget.

—  Make a budget: And stick to it. It may sound simple, but having a north star from the outset means it’s easier to resist deals you don’t necessarily need.

—  Preview prices: Advertised discounts aren’t always what they seem, so take note of pre-sale prices to ensure you’ve bagged a genuine bargain.

—  Watch for exclusives: Newsletters and social media are great spots to get the first sniff of discount codes, special offers and sale dates.

—  Get rewards: Check if your credit card or debit card offers cashback or shopping rewards. Just remember to pay your balance in full at the end of the month, or the interest owed could outweigh the savings.

—  Shop trusted brands: If a deal seems too good to be true, it might be. Check for any hidden catches, as you don’t want to be saddled with a faulty product or a delivery no-show at this time of year. Make sure each website has a reputable address, customer care number or online chat.

—  Try older tech: New smartphone models are usually released every year. If you’re on the hunt for a mobile phone, you can often clinch a good iPhone or Samsung deal by choosing a slightly older model with a bigger price cut.

—  Be snappy: The early bird gets the worm and planning ahead means bagging the best Black Friday deals. You can usually snap up big savings on the biggest tech, toy, beauty and fashion retailers in Ireland if you’re quick.

—  Know your refund rights: Shopping online has lots of advantages, including extra refund rights that you don’t get on the high street. Always check out the retailer’s refund policy before you click the buy button.

—  Buy online: Shopping online comfort of your home can mean better refund rights, an easier way to compare prices and additional savings on parking or transport.
