Irish Tech News review of Supertrends: 50 Things You Need to Know About the Future, by Lars Tvede.
The book addresses what we can expect the future to hold in terms of demographics, economics, technology, lifestyles, management techniques, environment and beyond – and how companies and governments should adapt to accelerating change.
Supertrends shows readers how futurists work, explains the core principles of efficient forecasting and explores the applications and future impact of new technologies.
These are turbulent times, and we all need to be ready for what’s coming if we hope to thrive. Will the Biotech Revolution transform life into a computer technology? How will innovation lead to greater prosperity and a better environment? What new networks and decentralised technologies will change society? What are the political implications of the technologies of tomorrow? Supertrends: 50 Things You Need to Know About the Future addresses what we can expect in the coming decades, and how companies and government should adapt to accelerating change.
Nailing the future is always hard to do. Go to big and fifty years later everyone will be giving out to you about the lack of flying cars that you ‘promised’ them. We can all think of bad examples of divining the future which went badly wrong, 2001 began the trend, we’re still not experiencing interstellar voyages yet. We could go on with other examples of things that haven’t come to pass, but, meanwhile back in 2020 Lars Tvede’s book is a smart, enjoyable, heads up book to read. Originally successfully published in Danish, we are fortunate to now be able to read it in English too.
The subtitle gives the book a path to follow, if it were an article it might be a bit click baity, but in a book it takes you on a more measured and reasoned analysis of different trends and how they can / might or will impact on us. There are no crazy or unrealistic predictions, but a lot of good, insightful ones that are logical and plausible.
Demography and genetic editing are covered with positive potential outcomes for humanity. Similarly his analysis of energy does make sense, and hopefully does set us up for a discussion about what life might be like when we can produce all the energy we need from sustainable and renewable sources.
We enjoyed this book and as an early read in 2020 it did serve as a good primer of trends to look out for, and to watch, aided by Tvede’s interesting and useful book. Definitely one to read.
