Red Bull announced today that applications for its Red Bull Basement University program have opened, calling on university students from around Ireland, and the world, to submit their ideas for how to harness technology to improve student life on campus and beyond. Applications will be open online from September 18 to October 29.

Following a successful launch last year, 2019 will see Red Bull Basement University travel to a total of 28 countries. Any students 18 years and older in any participating university, who have ideas of how to use technology to enhance student life will be eligible to submit applications. Red Bull Basement University encourages creative students in any course to apply, including makers, hackers, coders, developers, designers and engineers.

Once applications are submitted, Red Bull Basement University will narrow down finalists and pick a winner from each country, each of whom will then enter a six-week development phase to further evolve their project. During this phase, Red Bull Basement University will provide country winners with funding, international mentorship, networking opportunities, and well-equipped workspaces. These students will then be invited to the Red Bull Basement University Global Workshop, a four-day event that ends with the selection of the global winner. The 2019 Global Workshop will take place in Toronto, Canada from December 12-15.

Red Bull Basement University launched its inaugural program in 2018 with more than 300 universities and 16 countries participating. The participating students came up with innovative ideas, such as giving students greater access to voting in campus elections and improving metal recycling and waste collection. The global winning idea in 2018 was awarded to Team Vacant in Toronto, which designed a prototype that enables students to get real-time information on study space availability across different buildings on campus.

Students who are interested in applying to Red Bull Basement University must fill out the online submission form, which asks applicants to create a 60-second video describing their idea. Applications can be submitted by groups of up to two students in English or their local language including English subtitles.
