Describe the company – the elevator pitch …

You can use the Cosmic Watch as a clock but it’s much more! It’s also an entertaining educational tool to learn about the sky, how it seems to rotate around us and how the sun, moon and planets move over time. A perfect introduction to basic astronomy.

How are you different?

They are many sky guides out there, but no one will show you the concept of the celestial sphere and display the geocentric movements of the planets as the Cosmic Watch.

Why will the company / product do well?

It’s approach is to intuitively learn, having fun playing around. We have great response from children!

Where are you based?

We are based in Switzerland, country of watchmaking tradition.

When was the company launched?

We launched last summer.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

In October we got featured in some big online magazines and managed to be most downloaded app in Holland for some days. We were also App of the month in Wired UK.

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your

Every one who enjoy seen our planet Earth from space. We think this image is very powerful as it reminds of our cosmic existence. More specific:
– Professional and amateur Astronomers (telescope users and astrophotography): using the Cosmic Watch as your clock you will have constantly the overview of the sky, knowing when to observe the celestial bodies.
– Timekeeping lovers: the Cosmic Watch is the most beautiful astronomical clock of the digital era
– Astrologers and interested in astrology: have a beautiful astral chart for each moment.
– Celestial Navigation: pilots, sailors and ship captains. It’s the modern armillary sphere.
– Space and Sci-fi lovers: if you love space you will love the Cosmic Watch 🙂

Tell us about your team?

It started when Eduardo Santana, a graphic designer specialized in 3D, animation and projections, was thinking about timekeeping and calendars. Together with his friend Markus Humbel, a Qi Gong teacher and Marketing specialist, they took the challenge to redesign the clock. After 3 years of design and concept a Programmer was needed and Reto Spoerri, a teacher of interaction design at the art school of Zürich, came to the team. Adding interaction the clock was developed as an educational tool and released as an App.
We are a small company, running mainly by love, as getting known in the huge sea of Apps is a wast task.

What are you long term plans for your product / company?

We want to make the Cosmic Watch the best educational tool to learn about the movements of the sky. And we still dream of producing two standalone versions, one for the table and a big one for entrance halls and meeting rooms. We are looking for partners to accomplish this dream.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

I love everything which makes you move: jet-packs, levitating skateboards, electronic planes…
I think we are in a era in which irresponsible consumerism should be over. We need to take care of our beautiful planet. Seen it like that the bike is still a genius tech gadget 🙂

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

I hope for modular smart devices, so I can just assemble what I need.

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?

In the Cosmic Watch we united Astronomy, Astrology and Timekeeping, which used to be the same for thousands of years and share the same basics. Unluckily Astronomers and Science people don’t like it to even hear the word Astrology and get very upset about this feature. In the future we plan to separate this.
