Sky’s TV on demand App, Sky Go, launched on the iOS platform some months ago. Before it’s release we were told that it would launch on Android at the same time. This never happened for what ever reason, but now with Android’s ever increasing presence in the Smartphone market Sky seem to be revisiting the launch. A “spokesman” confirmed to Techradar that the App will now launch in the coming months. While that still isn’t a definitive release date, at least Sky are realising they are loosing out on a big chunk of the market by not having an Android compatible App.
UPDATE: Sky Go for Android due to launch this month. Stay tuned for more information.
Update 2: The sky Go Android App is finally being rolled out now for selected devices. With this roll comes access to more channels than before for every device supported, not just Android. These new channels include Sky 1, Sky Living and Sky Arts 1. There is an F1 channel in the works but unfortunately Android devices will not have access to Movies on demand until later in the year.
The list of Android devices supported at roll out are as follows:
Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Desire, HTC Desire S, HTC Desire HD, HTC Incredible or HTC Sensation.
More devices are to follow but no doubt the APK file will be available from different sources online so everyone will be able to install it.
The service is free for existing Sky Customers but there is an option to sign up for Sky Go for non existing customers. This will also give access to a more extensive library of content from a computer.
If you have tried out this App on your device let us know your thoughts below.
Update 3: One of our readers has reported that he has successfully got this App working on his Rooted Xperia Arc using a modded version of the App available over on the XDA forums.
