The Academy’s discourses are the oldest and most renowned series of talks in Ireland. The first discourses were presented in 1786.

What was the inspiration to start it?

Historically, Academy discourses were the occasion reserved for the most distinguished academics to first reveal and discuss their work in public. Robert Mallet revealed his pioneering work on earthquakes and William Rowan Hamilton talked about quaternion algebra at Academy discourses. Recent speakers have included Nobel Laureates, Venki Ramakrishnan, Amaryta Sen, William Campbell and Sir Paul Nurse. Other distinguished speakers were Mary McAleese, Catherine Day and Sir Stephen O’Rahilly. The Royal Irish Academy public discourse series is sponsored by Mason, Hayes & Curran.

What exciting things can people look forward to?
A discussion on forward looking, cutting edge research topics presented in a historic setting.

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

A small, intimate venue which allows for networking amongst research and industry leaders, and direct access to a high profile speaker. Lecture is followed by a reception.

Who will be speaking?

The speaker, Professor Máire O’Neill (FIAE, MRIA), is regarded as one of Europe’s leading experts on digital security and cryptography. Her work is helping to enhance global data security. Máire is the youngest ever engineering professor appointed at Queen’s University Belfast, the youngest to be elected a fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering, and she previously won British Female Inventor of the Year.
