What are you working on now?
I just completed publishing my first digital solo art show “Sea Watcher” to coincide with World Oceans Day.[i] With the COVID-19 social distancing rules in place, the United Nations in partnership with Oceanic Globalprepared a fascinating lineup of talks focusing on the theme of “innovation for a sustainable ocean.” UN World Oceans Day (UNWOD) is usually an invite-only affair at the UN headquarters in New York, but this year anyone can join in by following the live stream on the UNWOD website from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
My art show “Sea Watcher” which takes place at the Pinelo Art Gallery in Istanbul, Turkey from June 8 to June 22, 2020, starts on World Oceans Day[ii] and is a registered UNWOD digital event.[iii]
How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?
During the past year I participated in two solo and one group art shows. The Atelier Teymur Rzayev’s First Digital Climate Change Art Show which launched on World Environment Day on June 5 was published by world’s first climate change museum, The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change – Hong Kong[iv] and is a registered digital event for UN’s World Oceans days on June 8.[v] I launched my digital solo art show titled “Sea Watcher” parallel to the digital group art show on World Oceans Day.
What do you hope to express in your “Sea Watcher ” digital art exhibition?
The inspiration behind my art show “Sea Watcher” was my trip to the Antarctic in 2017 where I first hand witnessed the melting of the ice and with a great sound crash in to the sea. This brought tears to my eyes.[vi]
My solo digital art show “Sea Watcher” is an offshoot of taking part in the Atelier Teymur Rzayev First Digital Climate Change Art Show. Selva Ozelli curated the Atelier Teymur Rzayev First Digital Climate Change art show based on her series of articles on digital technology adoption, solar energy and tax policies in the jurisdictions with the greatest carbon emissions.
These articles have been published by the World’s first Climate Change Museum “The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change – Hong Kong” in addition to more than 100 other publications around the world. In her article titled “ Russia Leads Multinational Stablecoin Initiative.“[vii] Selva points out that oceans cover 70% of our world and act as the largest carbon sink of our planet. Oceans host 80% of all life while providing half of the planet’s oxygen.
According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA): “More than 90% of the warming that has happened on Earth over the past 50 years has occurred in the ocean.” Oceans are warming at the same rate as if five Hiroshima bombs were being dropped into them every second. This has contributed to the rise of sea levels from the melting of ice sheets in the Arctic, which is also warming faster than the rest of the world.
Crumbling coastal communities enveloped in raging wildfires; melting icebergs crashing in to the sea with thunderous sound; homeless penguins are the most visible effects of melting glaciers and sea ice in the polar regions. Scientists are also learning about less obvious but still alarming results of this shift: the wider spread of wildlife disease and contaminants into the ecosystem as melting ice allows pathways to open up in the Arctic, people and animals to use these routes to access previously inaccessible areas according to a recent study in the journal Scientific Reports.
Diminished sea ice allows contaminants to travel between nations via ice, which can transport a wide variety of contaminants ranging from anthropogenic pollutants like oil, lead, mercury, and microplastics, to dust, sediments, aerosol deposits, algae, and even biological communities.
My late husband was a captain. Captains determine their sea routes based on the silent light signals from the lighthouses in the sea. With my sea and lighthouse themed paintings, I want to draw attention to the importance of oceans to our world, our ecology and the need for us to guard them. I want the silent signals from the lighthouses to be visible to all of us not only captains of our world.
What are your plans for the future?
In good health, I hope to continue making sea and lighthouse themed art work. I am now painting homeless penguin themed paintings.
