By @SimonCocking review of RISE– Start living the life you were meant to lead by Royston Guest. Price: £14.99 Publisher: John Murray Published: 10 January 2019
Life today is fast paced. We juggle busy careers and social commitments, we’re bombarded with information and alerts, and we collect possessions – it all seems important, but deep down, many of us still have a feeling that something isn’t quite right. It might be that you’re approaching a milestone birthday, facing a redundancy, divorce or break-up, or just generally feel stuck in rut and demotivated – you want to improve your life and reach your goals, but just don’t how or where to start.
One of the common traits of life’s high achievers is that they are constantly learning from the past; but they don’t live in the past. RISE shares a plethora of ideas, strategies and practical tools that enables you to become more self-aware – unpacking your relationship with your past and understanding your present in order to make the conscious choices that will help you unlock your potential, unleash your success and create the future you want.
This book is aiming to give you the kick to realign your career, achieve your goals, and make the changes you are aiming to see in your own life. Some of the parables and examples you may have come across before, but, perhaps like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, you chose the one you need at the time you need it. There were still some interesting, thoughtful and inspiring homilies to give you, or the person in your life the kick up the @~$% that they need. The anecdote about the helpful person who was sick of hearing someone complain all the time was enjoyable. Without giving too much away they pointed out to the glass half full complainer that they basically had less than their life left to live, and did they want to burn through those remain 12,000 odd days in such a continued grumpy way.
There are so many energy vampires out there that it does make sense to firstly have a way to navigate around them, and secondly to at least try and throw them a lifeline to approach life in a more positive manner. There are many gems like this in the book. Guest also emphasises that success is often built on creating strong good habits, at as an early an age as possible. If you can do this you are then laying the foundations for later achievements. At the same time it is not possible to go back in time, nor to dwell on what has already passed so there is still massive potential to achieve positive outcomes if we change negative patterns and habits today. In this way, across various aspects of our lives and practices Guest outlines a series of ideas, options and techniques to pull yourself onto a positive track for your own goals. In this way this is a great book to read in the week of Blue Monday and going forwards for the rest of the year. Why not, it’s never too late to take the next step towards what you really want to do.
