The RhinoShellPro battery case for the Samsung Galaxy S5 is a protective case which adds additional battery capacity but also introduces wireless charging into the mix.

To achieve all of this, the case comes in a couple of parts which need to be mated with the phone’s original battery to complete the install.

The black piece in the middle is a 2500mAh battery which is first fitted to the phone in place of the original battery.

Once you have that installed, you then place the original battery into the new one so the two batteries essentially become one 5300mAh capacity unit.

Once you have that done, you click the new protective back cover on in place of the old one and you’re left with something that looks like this:

As you can see in the image above, there are two pogo pins on the back cover. These pogo pins make contact with the charging mat that’s included and charge the phone once it’s placed on it.

The system works well and the phone starts charging after about 1 second of being placed on the mat.

Obviously to fit everything in, the new case does add some bulk to what is essentially a very slim phone.

Overall though, the extra bulk is not excessive and I think if you are in the market for a case like this you will have already decided that the extra size is worth it for the extra features that the case adds.

So how does it all work out?

The wireless charging aspect of the case works exactly like it should. You place the phone on the mat and it charges without the need for plugging in a cable. If you’re out somewhere and need to charge the phone, you can do so via the traditional micro USB port on the phone.

With both batteries in place, it took around 4 hours to charge the phone to 100% using the charging mat.

Once both batteries were fully charged, with moderate usage we gained an additional 1.5 days battery life which basically meant you were never worried about where the closest charging point was!

One of the things we’d like to have seen included is a kick stand built into the case. The extra battery capacity allows you to watch more movies on the go for instance, so it would make sense to facilitate this with a way of propping up the device and it would be easy to integrate it into the design.

If you are in the market for this type of case and don’t mind the extra size, the RhinoShellPro ticks more boxes that most of the other options on the market. It makes it easy to keep the battery topped up via the mat and nearly doubles the battery life overall.

The case is available to purchase from Amazon, and from the RhinoShellPro site for €49.99.
