Refurbed hits a new milestone of a billion euro worth of refurbished tech sales

Refurbed, Ireland’s leading online marketplace for refurbished technology, announces an incredible milestone of reaching a billion euro in sales across all of its seven markets, including Austria, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Denmark and The Netherland. Refurbed, established in 2017 by its three co-founders in Vienna, Austria, launched its service in Ireland in February 2021. Since then, Irish consumers now rank the second highest per capita, only after the company’s home country Austria, when it comes to buying more sustainable technology from the marketplace.

Refurbed provides Irish consumers with more sustainable, refurbished technology when compared to the mass waste produced by buying new devices. Refurbed has experienced tremendous growth in Ireland since it first launched. This year to date, refurbed has experienced over 2.5x year-on-year growth, with an over 150% increase in sales. Similar figures have been recorded for 2021 vs 2022. iPhones, Samsung Phones, MacBooks and iPads are among the most popular devices bought among Irish consumers. Ireland’s top-selling products since the company launched in Ireland include the following: iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy S10 and iPad 6 (2018).

This growth has shown Irish consumers in particular, are becoming increasingly aware of the problematic working conditions, growing e-waste productions and CO2-intensive supply chains involved in buying new tech devices. In fact, a recent study commissioned by refurbed and conducted by the renowned Fraunhofer Austria Research Institute found, among other things, that professional recycling of electrical appliances can save up to 83% of CO2 when compared to buying all new.

As well as reaching this Billion Euro milestone, refurbed is growing its leadership presence within Europe. Last week Co-Founder, Kilian Kaminski, was appointed as one of the newest board members of EUREFAS, the European Refurbishment Association. The aim of this association is to create standards within the refurbishment industry and promote sustainable consumption across Europe.

Speaking on the announcement today, Kilian Kaminski, co-founder of refurbed said ‘Now more than ever, it is important that consumers across the globe think more consciously when it comes to purchasing goods. We see this new milestone as a strong sign that sustainability and the circular economy are on the rise. We have achieved great things together and we will achieve even more in the future. Ireland is one of refurbed’s valued markets and we look forward to what the future holds for this growing market.’.

Pádraig Power, Senior Marketing Manager: Global Operations and Ireland at refurbed added ‘We are very pleased and extremely proud of this result and milestone in refurbed’s history. It is incredible to see how much refurbed has grown since we first launched in Ireland in early 2021. Ireland ranking second after Austria demonstrates Irish consumers’ commitment to more sustainable consumption.’
