We learned more about Diarmuid Lyng’s retreats in West Kerry where you can reconnect with the Irish language and the spectacular nature of the Wild Atlantic Way.
When and where is it on?
April 10-13
Brú na Gráige, Ballyferriter, Co Kerry
How many years has it been going?
We are in our third year this year.
What was the inspiration to start it?
The gift the language gave us, in realising that we are only three days away from allowing the language to open up inside of us, to know that this language we reduce to a subject in school is actually vibrantly alive and more beautiful than we could ever imagine.
What exciting things can people look forward to?
People can look forward to pushing their comfort zone, and to be in an environment with other people who are equally uncertain, equally vulnerable, but in sharing that space they will come to realise that they are in an environment in which great strength comes to the surface.
We will combine healthy practices for the body and healthy food for the body with an increased knowledge and awareness of nature around us, the healing plants, the power of untainted wild food.
We will play hurling and we will try our hand at poetry, we will explore the richness of the language, regardless of how meager the experience to date, and we will take part in a sweat lodge, which is an outdoor sauna type of experience.
What opportunities are on offer for those attending?
Increased connection with nature, with language, with likeminded people and most of with self, the joy of having pushed boundaries that haven’t been pushed for a while.
What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?
I encourage people to show up. Just show up. There is very little else needed. Nature, the language, the facilitators, the other attendees, they will work their magic. It’s just about showing up in order to be more fully in the world.
How can people book tickets / when does it usually sell out?
It has sold out twice now and we have been delighted with attendances. Tickets can be booked on the website wildirishretreat.com or get in touch at wildirishretraet@gmail.com.
Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?
Just to thank you for the opportunity to put ourselves out there to your readers and those on your mailing list. As a fledgling organisation we are exceptionally grateful for the opportunity.
