Latest interesting update from regular contributor Timothy Chou, written by Jen Clark.

Mystified by the hows, whats and wherefores of the IoT? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. And now there’s a course designed to make it simple – courtesy of the IoT Institute and Dr Timothy Chou, Lecturer at Stanford University and author of Precision: Principles, Practices and Solutions for the Internet of Things.

Precision. Principles, practices and solutions for the Internet of Things by Timothy Chou. Reviewed

Why the course is useful

Even if you’re no stranger to the concept of the Internet of Things, finding out how to actually use it to add value to a business can be daunting. Dr Chou’s online course demystifies the whole process and begins by outlining the fundamental technologies in a simple, five-level framework:

  1. The Things themselves
  2. How they are Connected
  3. How data is Collected
  4. What you can Learn from the data
  5. What you can Do differently

The course guides you through the initial setup of an organisation’s IoT framework and how to define basic principles behind the operations, before going on to show how this works in the real world.

Ditching the jargon

What makes Dr Chou’s course unique is that it is suitable for people from wide-ranging disciplines – whether engineering, operations, IT, marketing, or customer services. You don’t need to be a robotics expert to grasp it and there are no infuriating acronyms to pretend to understand. I’m a particular fan of the “Who’s who in the IoT Zoo” section – a simple overview that makes sense of the expansive IoT ecosystem.

Real use-case examples

The course offers fourteen case studies in agriculture, healthcare, transportation, oil & gas, mining, construction, power and water. The studies are from the perspective of both companies that build machines (wind turbines, for example) and the companies that use those machines (farms, hospitals or utilities.)

Register online. Did I mention it’s free?

Well, for the next 90 days anyway. Register online to gain access, and you’ll receive a certificate when you reach the end of the course. You can also check out Dr Chou’s book: Precision: Principles, Practices and Solutions for the Internet of Things.
