The Pixel 4a, launched this month, with the first 5G enabled Pixels, Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 coming this autumn. Having previously roadtested and reviewed the Pixel 4 we were curious to see what was on offer with this version.

In a lot of ways, it is not a million miles away from the Pixel 4, though you might have guessed that. The appealing factor of course is that if you weren’t able to afford the Pixel 4, you are in the positive position of now being able to use it’s newer successor at approximately half the price and with double the memory, 128 GBs  vs 64 GBs last time around, for more of the photos and videos you want to take. It is a refreshing marketing strategy to take, but as we were impressed by the quality of the camera and the photography in general in the Pixel 4, you lose none of this with the 4a.

By offering up this phone at a relatively affordable price compared to higher end competitors it helps photographers. With a similar quality of photography on this phone, it does continue to raise the bar in terms of what can be captured by a wider range of photographers. The evolution of the Pixel phones definitely suggests that Samsung and Apple do not have it all their own way in terms of the best phones to use for taking photos.

It is an interesting and fast evolving space but the Pixel range does seem to be iterating quickly and producing better and better products to compete with its rivals. Overall the consumer can only benefit from this, and it may also begin to generate its own cadre of fanboys and girls who swear by this particular phone.

The Pixel 4a comes in Just Black with a 5.8-inch OLED display.

It has a matte finish that feels secure and comfortable in your hand and includes Pixel’s signature color pop power button in mint. Pixel 4a recorder connects with Google Docs and includes helpful experiences like the Personal Safety app for real-time emergency notifications and car crash detection.
