Performing as You, How to have authentic impact in every role you play, reviewed
By @SimonCocking review of Performing as You, How to have authentic impact in every role you play, 9 Jul 2019. By Diana Theodores, available here.
All the world’s a stage, and the greatest role you’ll ever get to play is you. As the ‘Coach in Your Pocket’, Diana Theodores shows you how to bring your fuller, authentic self forward to get great results for women at all levels of the career ladder. Whether you need to rouse your team, pitch to the board, influence stakeholders, give feedback, speak to one person or 1000 – you’ll discover that you have everything you need to shine in every role you play.
A great read for men too, this uplifting, inspirational book will give you: • An irresistible invitation – to ignite your fire, grow your wings and lift off into your best personal performance • Dynamic tools – for fuller presence and engagement in all your environments • Pointers – to break limiting habits and beliefs • Evidence – transformative results from client case studies • Inspiration – to reclaim your creative powers and upgrade your impact
- Studies have shown that men are 40% more likely than women to be promoted – we can work to close this inequality by allowing women the confidence to be themselves at work.
- Women scored higher in 84% of leadership competencies than men according to Harvard Business Review research – and yet they make up only 4.9% of Fortune 500 CEOs.
- By women’s leadership expert Diana Theodores – Diana works with clients worldwide, using a dynamic and embodied approach to help women connect with their unique voice, presence, and authentic impact.
- Almost half of top female execs ‘feel they must compromise their authenticity as they reach top positions’ – The KPMG Women’s Leadership Summit Report shows we are in desperate need of more women being themselves.
Performing as You, How to have authentic impact in every role you play, reviewed
This is an interesting book, especially as many many people hate public speaking. Theodores aims to chart a careful balance between aiming to be effective in what you say, and when you say, while also working to ensure that you remain yourself, and deliver a message that is true to you. Chapters like ‘Your impact and influence is not one size fits all’ very much capture this attempt to deliver personalised value and insights for the books readers.
Following chapters including ‘Great Performers Rehearse’ and ‘Ask for help’ illustrate that becoming a good speaker is not something that you achieve overnight. Instead it is something you have to work on, again and again. Analyse your performance, assess what worked well, what didn’t, and be interested and hungry to keep learning and improving.
If you can hear feedback and even criticism and take the relevant insights from it, then you are onto the path to success. In this context Theodores book is a helpful and practical guide to becoming a better, and, as she stresses, more authentic speaker. What have you got to lose? And if it removes the world of a few more death by powerpoint speakers then even better.
