The search for the 2022 winners of The Earthshot Prize has begun. The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) is the Official Nominator for The Earthshot Prize.

The Earthshot Prize was inaugurated in 2020 by Prince William and Sir David Atttenborough, the first winners were announced in October 2021. It is the most prestigious and global environment prize in history and the project was created to find new resolutions to the world’s biggest environmental problems.

For the next 10 years, £1 million prizes will be awarded for people that offer at least 50 solutions to environmental problems by 2030. The Earthshot Prize plans to influence and inspire a decade of action, convening the environmental world with funders, businesses, and individuals to increase impact.

EMEC has been offered to be an official nominator following a visit to Orkney by Prince Williams and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, in May last year when the royals were presented to some of the world-leading decarbonisation improvements in Orkney.

EMEC is one of over 300 organisations from around the world, that has been invited to be an official nominator. The nominators seek to identify the most impactful solutions, from grassroots to businesses, and submit nominations to five Earthshot categories. Which are protected and restore nature, clean the air, revive the oceans, build a waste-free world, and fix our climate.

EMEC has been assigned to nominate people, communities, businesses, and organisations that are trying to find solutions to achieve the five Earthshots. Solutions should be attainable, have been tested in-field or with target audiences, and need to have a great impact within the next five years.

In 2022 additional information is being considered on preventative solutions that provide an alternative to approaches that cause damage to the environment and focus on the cause of the problem.
