New Technology puts Census 2016 on the Map

The ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology in collaboration with Ordnance Survey Ireland and the Central Statistics Office has recently published the findings from Ireland’s Census 2016 online.

This information has been made available at http://census2016.geohive.ie/. On this website, the CSO statistical data from the 2016 Census and OSi geospatial boundary data have been fused together to provide almost 500 layers of geo-statistical information, visualised as colour coded thematic maps or downloadable as Open Data.

Visitors can access statistics in any of the 15 Census themes, including Education, Commuting, and Housing. The interactive website also provides instructional videos and tools to build your own StoryMap, enabling public users to interact with the latest Census data to the fullest.

ADAPT have supported this project from conception, as Lorraine McNerney, General Manager for Geospatial Systems at OSi, explains: “This initiative from OSi and the CSO builds on a collaborative project with the ADAPT Centre which developed boundary information as Linked Data on the Web.  On this site, Census 2016 datasets have been combined OSi’s official boundary data to link geography and statistics. This project is a tangible application of the project results where end users and web developers will be able to interact with some of OSi’s key data sets and content in more intelligent, exciting and creative ways.”

The ADAPT Centre, a world-leading research centre funded by Science Foundation Ireland, have been collaborating with OSi since 2014 on a range of projects. These are based on making geospatial data available using the most up-to-date W3C Linked Data standards, technologies and practices. The centre has a specialist team of expert researchers in this area who continue to deliver on industry applications.

Prof. Declan O’Sullivan, Principal Investigator at ADAPT, remarked: “We are pleased that our ongoing collaboration with OSi is continuing to have impact and is helping to progress the Irish Government’s strategy of integrating diverse datasets through Linked Open Data. Integration of diverse data is a key research and expertise area within ADAPT. ”
