New Upskilling Courses launched by MTU to help people learn helpful new skills to follow new paths and opportunities. Many are short and specific in content and time duration to ensure effective, quick learning outcomes.
Munster Technological University (MTU) has launched a new suite of over 40 micro-credential courses designed to help professionals and individuals upskill and reskill in response to rapidly evolving workforce needs, creating flexible pathways for lifelong learning across a range of sectors.
The courses have been designed to address emerging skills needs identified by employers, regulators, state agencies and not-for-profit organisations, ensuring learners can develop practical, workplace-relevant expertise
The launch was marked by an event at MTU, bringing together employers, industry representatives and education stakeholders to explore the role of flexible learning in supporting workforce development and regional economic growth.
The university’s micro-credentials are delivered through part-time, flexible formats and are designed to provide high-impact learning experiences that can be immediately applied in the workplace.
Commenting on the launch of the micro-credential courses, Professor Maggie Cusack, President of MTU, said: “At MTU, we have a proud tradition of supporting lifelong learning, and our new micro-credential courses reflect our commitment to providing flexible, accessible, and future-focused education. Developed in collaboration with industry, these courses are designed to help professionals upskill and reskill while responding to real-world skills needs.
“In a world that is changing rapidly, continuous learning is more important than ever. By investing in continuous development that combines flexibility and academic excellence, we are helping individuals, organisations and communities adapt, grow and succeed.”
Gerard O’Donovan, Vice Dean of Business at MTU and Project Lead, said: “The strength of MTU’s micro-credential offering lies in its close connection with industry. By working directly with employers and sector stakeholders, we can identify emerging skills needs and translate them into practical, targeted learning opportunities that support workforce development and regional growth.
“This ensures our courses remain relevant, responsive and immediately applicable in professional settings, helping organisations build capability while supporting individuals to develop the skills needed for the future of work.”
Ronan Emmett, Learning & Talent Acquisition Manager, Boston Scientific, said: “The pace of change across industry means organisations need access to flexible, high-quality learning opportunities that allow employees to develop new skills while remaining in the workplace. Traditional education pathways don’t always meet the needs of working professionals or employers seeking to respond quickly to emerging challenges and opportunities.”
“MTU’s micro-credential offering is an important development because it has been shaped through engagement with industry and focused on practical skills that can be applied immediately. Initiatives like this help businesses build capability, support employee development and ensure our workforce remains competitive in a rapidly changing environment.”
The new portfolio comprises over 40 micro-credential courses developed across MTU’s faculties, covering topics ranging from AI, cybersecurity and data analytics to sustainability, leadership, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, creative practice, financial services and maritime operations. The diverse offering reflects MTU’s close engagement with industry and its commitment to supporting workforce development across key sectors of the economy.
The micro-credential initiative forms part of MTU’s wider commitment to lifelong learning and strengthening links between higher education, industry and society. Through flexible delivery models and industry-informed curriculum design, MTU aims to make high-quality education more accessible to learners at all stages of their careers.
Developed as a result of a micro-credential project funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) under the Technological Sector Advancement Fund (TSAF), the courses offer focused, flexible and accredited learning opportunities that can be completed alongside work and personal commitments.
