Review of OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual with 3-port Hub
For a big box the device itself is not that big, approximately the length and width of a normal business book, and about three inches deep. It is a pleasant surprise too not to have a fan loudly whirling when it is on. It actually seems to make virtually no noise at all, and equally it doesn’t seem to get very hot either, which a plus after those old solid devices that made an awful racket and also got very hot too.
While the blurb below suggests that this is a plug and play set up, our experience was not like that. There are a few, non obvious, configuration steps that you do need to go through. Do you want it set to Raid ), JBOD, RAID 1, or Span for example? And especially as there is no tool supplied to turn the relevant dial once you have established which setting you want.
This was a potentially serious bump in the road, however on their webite there was a good chat tool, and asking what were potentially dumb questions we were guided through the set up process. This did still require being referred to a 3rd party youtube video explainer, which did help us to get it all configured, but would again validate our experience that this was not a plug and play experience. After this it all progressed much more smoothly and it seems like a good piece of gear to have on your desk, though more one for heavy duty users rather than casual ones.
