Maths Week Ireland has announced the development of a Maths Map of Ireland, supported by funding from the ESB Energy for Generations Fund. The fully interactive all-island map will launch in March 2021 and display local maths connections across Ireland, allowing primary and secondary school students, teachers, and the wider community to learn the location of important mathematical sites and activities.
The project will include the creation of a dedicated plug-in for both the Maths Week and Maths Ireland websites, www.mathsweek.ie and www.mathsireland.ie and the development of an app for Android and iOS.
The map will display markers showing locations of key mathematical interest across Ireland, categorized by age group and audience, allowing the magic of maths to be enjoyed by both tourists and local residents. For families, the map offers a fun insight into important maths locations in their community. While teachers can enjoy linking both geography and maths lessons by exploring local fun facts to motivate students.
Speaking at the announcement Eoin Gill, Maths Week Ireland said: “We are delighted to announce the creation of this interactive Maths Map of Ireland and would like to thank ESB Energy for Generations fund for their support. The map will be an excellent online resource for people all across the island of Ireland, highlighting the important areas of significance in their local communities.
The creation of the map was announced during Maths Week 2020 which continues until this Sunday, October 18th. The all-island festival of maths has grown to be the biggest such festival in the world and is now replicated in Scotland and England.
A fun, all-inclusive celebration, Maths Week promotes and develops a positive attitude towards maths in young people, and a wider awareness of the importance of maths across all sectors of society. Cross-community and cross-border participation is an important part of Maths Week.
