Many DevOps opportunities exist in Ireland, and why this will only continue to increase

Following on from Michael Diver’s great article “How do I become a DevOps Engineer”, Software Placements are currently hiring for a range of such positions in Ireland. DevOps may seem like the new buzzword in the IT sector, but it is important to recognise that the interoperability of different operating systems will only become more and more important as we move to a more interconnected world. The Internet of Things (IoT) and then subsequentially simply an internet of everything will require an increasing number of people skilled in the arts of DevOps.

As Michael explains in his article ” a good DevOps Engineer will have a rounded experience in the areas of systems administration, software development, deployment and release management.” It can be hard initially to excel in all areas, but it makes sense to be aware of what you are and are not strong in, and then use this as a road map to identify the areas where you need to become stronger. Those people who do plan their career in this way will have a much higher chance of being able to progress towards higher levels of responsibility, more challenging projects to work on, and naturally more interesting better-paid opportunities.

Devops has helped to revolutionise the Software Engineering industry and enabled the creation of new software products at a much faster pace. Dave Anderson,  explains how fast things are happening. “By 2010, the introduction of DevOps and Cloud computing saw features (or even entire start-ups) being created in weeks.” As Dave further explains when successfully carried out it has wider successful impacts across the whole organisation “DevOps is a movement where all members across an IT organisation work tightly together to enable the fast flow of high-quality software and applications from development into live production.” Ireland is in a fortunate position where it has many of the worlds leading software development companies with a presence here, either as the EMEA (European Middle East and African) head of operations or as the location where the company first emerged from the vibrant Irish start-up scene. For potential job seekers, it means that there is a wide range of companies, from start-ups to multinationals looking for skilled DevOps workers with a broad range of experience to work for them.

It’s an exciting time to be based in Ireland, with many opportunities emerging both in the major cities, Dublin, Galway, Cork and in other locations too. The sector will continue to change and evolve, as Ronal van Loon comments “to state that DevOps and IT operations teams will face new challenges in the coming years sounds a bit redundant, as their core responsibility is to solve problems and overcome challenges.” This is, however, a great opportunity for those willing to follow the tips outlined in Michael’s piece, and to also consider Ireland as their next career move.
