Lumen, the first ever app-only dating platform dedicated to the over-50s is launching in Ireland today. With 100% of profiles verified, an emphasis on quality conversations and zero tolerance for ageism, Lumen builds on insights from existing dating sites to provide a safe, welcoming, and age appropriate dating community for the thousands of single, divorced or widowed men and women in Ireland aged over 50.
With 73% of those aged 50 to 59 now having a smartphone, and over-55s expected to represent the second biggest demographic on Facebook by the end of 2018, Lumen is a free mobile app (iOS and Android) tailored to the needs and habits of the over-50s that makes it as easy as possible to meet genuine, like-minded singles in a safe community.
71% of over-50s on existing dating sites said that they would feel more comfortable if they knew the person they were talking to was genuine or had a verified profile. To help to provide this reassurance to its members, and tackle one of the most common challenges with online dating, Lumen requires all users to upload a selfie which is cross-referenced with their photos, to prove they are who they say they are.
Dating expert and Lumen CMO Charly Lester said: “Over the years people have often asked me where their single parents should be dating, and I used to genuinely struggle to find an answer. In Lumen, we have created a space which embodies the values of our over-50s audience, and built the type of community we would happily recommend to our friends and parents”.
Antoine Argouges Lumen CEO says “Do a search of the phrase ‘over 50s dating’. The results that come up are embarrassing for the industry. The over-50s have been mistreated by the dating sites for years. I’m excited to see the Lumen team launching an app which finally listens to this audience and specifically targets their issues and needs.’
“The majority of single over-50s we know are tech-savvy, active, and looking for their next adventure. But this isn’t the reality we see reflected in the dating industry,” says Antoine Argouges. “Lumen finally provides a contemporary solution which over-50s can rely on to meet like-minded people”.
Data from existing dating apps shows that the people over 50 prefer longer, more detailed messages and profiles. Lumen has introduced a minimum character length for ice breaker messages on its platform to encourage meaningful conversations and help new relationships get off to the best start. Profiles are also more detailed, with everyone required to provide details on who they are and what they are looking for with every single profile containing at least three photos.
The app is free to join and use, and every day each member can start three new conversations with other users. This feature is designed to prevent spammy messages, and to encourage users to take time and think about who they contact and what they say. Once a message is sent, the recipient has 72 hours to reply to the message, and then it disappears from their inbox.
Lumen Premium offers members optional paid additional features – double the number of daily messages and the ability to extend the amount of time which someone has to reply to your messages.
Lumen is available to users in Ireland and can be downloaded now, free of charge, from the App Store and Google Play Store
