Love Death and Robots

is a series available on Netflix UK and Ireland. It was created by Tim Miller who is well known for movies such as Dead-pool. The premise of the show is every episode of the series, there is a 20-minute piece based on one of the topics of the show Love Death and Robots. The first season had been released via Netflix in 2018. And the reaction clearly warranted a second season which came out in May 2021. There is also a change of animation and producers for most episodes

Initially the first thing that does stand out for me is the quality of animation of all episodes. The one that I am most fond of is episode 3 “Pop Squad”. The quality is almost as if it was some sort of Disney movie, without the death that is.

Following on from that it is clear to see the nuances that are in the episodes. Most episodes made myself ask questions internally, such as would I want to live forever? Or do I want to always want to fit in a certain group?

The episodes allow you to ask those questions because it portrays both scenarios, such as in episode 3 “Pop Squad” it shows both sides of the story in terms of people wanting to live forever, which meant not procreating. As well as people who would have children, but this meant that they would not live forever. So, the question is do you take risks in life but not live forever or keep within yourself and potentially not have an exciting life, but you do get to live forever.

The series also portrays the rise in technology and how it can potentially lead to robots taking over society through artificial intelligence and various other forms. For example, in the first episode called “Automated customer service” which presents an automated vacuum cleaner that malfunctions, but by doing that it is at the detriment at the owner.

This again raises questions about artificial intelligence and how far it could potentially go, it can be seen as a positive as it is helping people with everyday chores. But this episode shows that it can change at an instant.

Overall, this season of Love Death and Robots is a very thought provoking one for myself, as after watching all episodes it just left me with asking more questions and becoming more inquisitive about life in general. Miller does a great job in portraying those topics in the episodes. I look forward to seeing if Netflix take this on for a third season.
