1 min pitch for what you are doing now?

Hosted by Eoin Fitzgerald and Pete Townsend, MoneyNeverSleeps is a weekly half-hour podcast that looks inside the mind of entrepreneurs and at why they do what they do. We launched in May 2018 and produced 31 episodes for Season 1, and we kicked off Season 2 in January.  Our guests include some of the top entrepreneurs from Ireland and further afield, intrapraneurs and inspiring people helping startups in different ways.

How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?

The first seven months of MoneyNeverSleeps blew past us like a monsoon.  Pete had some podcasting experience but this was Eoin’s first time on air.  We loved every minute of it but the tweaking was nonstop to get things right.   We’re so grateful to Conan Brophy at CreateSound, our recording and sound engineer, as he’s been so helpful.  What worked well is our natural curiosities about people, which has led to some engaging storytelling by our guests.  What’s been hard is lining up the guests to record three to four episodes in one shot! We have a running list of at least 30 people we really want to interview, but the key is to balance that with those that will draw an audience, i.e. downloads.  The learning experience of digital marketing through social media has been fascinating as well, but LinkedIn, Twitter and website templates can be finicky! We’ve been very lucky to have awesome sponsors for the podcast in Top Tier Recruitment, as Paul Smyth and Laura Smyth from Top Tier have contributed some excellent content on top of their sponsorship.

What are your plans for the future?

We’re approaching 10,000 downloads across 20+ countries from Season 1, and we’re averaging 1,000+ downloads per week across iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud and other channels.  We’re going to continue with what’s worked so far, which is giving entrepreneurs and those in the startup community a voice and help them tell their stories. We did one episode with a remote guest, Bradley Tusk from Tusk Ventures in the US, in Season 1 and are aiming to do more in Season 2 as we know need to do a lot more of this to grow the global audience.  What you trade off in sound quality with the remote recording for a bigger audience can be helpful, but people stop listening if they can’t hear the guest.

What do you talk about on the podcast?

We try to get inside the head of our guests and push them to tell their story in a unique way.  One of our listeners told me that there was a singular moment in each episode where they “got it” with the guest’s mindset.  As our guests are mainly entrepreneurs, we talk about their hard decisions, their big moments in life, their personality traits that have been helpful and hurtful and what motivates them.  With Pete and Eoin’s backgrounds in fintech, we geek out on the technical side of things every once in a while, but it’s mostly about the human side. With intrapraneurs, or those building ventures within corporate settings, we take the same approach.  With startup mentors and those in venture capital, we take a slightly different tact to gather their insights on working with entrepreneurs.

What inspired you to start it?

Eoin and Pete met in 2016 and they stayed in touch as Eoin started investing in startups through Enterprise Ireland and Pete started advising startups through Norio Ventures.  When Eoin decided he wanted to launch a podcast, Pete was just finishing a project with the consultancy 11:FS which included crafting a handful of episodes of the Fintech Insider podcast.  Eoin reached out to Pete to see if he could help, and the rest is history.

Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?

You can never read too much, but just make sure you balance the fiction with the non-fiction.  Pete and Eoin both follow Ben Horowitz from a16z, and Ben’s book The Hard Thing About Hard Things was an inspiration for Pete in founding Norio Ventures.  Pete reads a curated version of FT content and Finextra daily, and consumes as much as he can from CB Insights.  That’s only the tip of the iceberg though, as it’s the digging behind the scenes of what you read and then talking to people about what you find that’s really valuable.  Eoin reads a mix of stuff from Irish Tech News to anything written by Chris Skinner, Michael Lewis, Malcolm Gladwell, etc.
