Leading Remotely Achieving Success in a Globally Connected World, reviewed

We look at this timely book by Mike Parkes, published by Bloomsbury on June 11th, available here.

Leading Remotely Achieving Success in a Globally Connected World, reviewed

This book is timely as, perhaps kicking and screaming, the world has moved into a new paradigm of work. For sure not all jobs can be done remotely, but many can, and many people, who used to have to trudge to work, have realised they can still do their work, sometimes even better than before. The cat is truly out of the bag, and, having seen what good could be like, employers and CEOs are having to up their game and move quickly if they wish to retain their best and brightest staff.

Mike Parkes tackles this topic and the issues arising well. As with all more effective books, he also brings in a range of experts and CEOs who have been through these growing pains. These industry leaders have good and relevant experience that enables us to consider what good or even excellent could look like and some smart, practical tips on how to implement these strategies to be as effective as possible.

The book is structured well, with six concise and logical chapters, the whole book comes in at under 200 pages but it feels well presented and with enough information to take away and muse upon. Well worth checking out.

More about the book

Packed full of research, case studies and practical advice, this is the essential guide to leading remotely. More than ever before, business leaders are responsible for teams in locations spread across regions, countries, as well as across the globe, and more recently with the pandemic, those working from home. Leading a remote team is a unique challenge, and many leaders struggle by relying upon the skills and approaches that served them well in the past when leading their immediate, onsite team.

Leading Remotely is a ground-breaking guide on how to overcome the unique obstacles faced when leading a remote team. It features practical examples and insights from leaders across the globe, and draws upon over 15 years of empirical evidence to provide essential advice on how to successfully lead remote teams. It also features the insights and learning of individuals leading through the pandemic.

Mike Parkes has worked with managers and executives for over 30 years, guiding them through their leadership and change challenges. Mike was one of the founding directors of Momentum Development and subsequently set up Momentum Results LLP, a business consultancy which he runs to this day. He was previously the Chief
Executive of the Development Associates Group, a subsidiary of Deloitte.

Mike is the lead facilitator of the British Retail Consortium Retail Masters course at the Said Business School, Oxford University. His first book, Business Facilitation, was published in March 2014.
