By @SimonCocking. Laurence McCahill interviewed. Building a global tribe of dreamers that do @happystartups | Recovering agency founder @spookstudio. See him speak in Cork at the next Smarter Egg event on April 19th. Book tickets here.

Brief background about you?

I’m Laurence, co-founder of The Happy Startup School. We’re the world’s first business school that measures success in happiness rather than profits. I’m a failed economist turned designer – for 10 years I ran a digital agency before leaving that behind last year to fully focus on our work with the School. I used to design products, I now get my energy from designing meaningful learning experiences.

What inspired you to speak at this event?

I love folks that grab the bull by the horns and kickstart communities and I got to know Aodan and what he’s doing at Smarter Egg a while back. Coincidentally I have family in Ballincollig and after a few false starts the stars aligned this time for me to make it over for this event. I’m really looking forward to it.

Why it will be helpful for people to attend. What will they get out of it?

I’ll be sharing a bit about our journey building the agency to now growing and nurturing a community of thousands from around the world. We have a unique approach to company building and I’ll be sharing stories from our community over the course of the evening. We’ve proven that putting happiness at the core makes perfect business.

Who has inspired you?

Many people, and different people at different stages of my life. When we started out we looked to folks like Ricardo Semler (Semco), Yves Chouinard (Patagonia) and Tony Hsieh (Zappos) for inspiration. Their books really helped to shape our thinking and gave us confidence that we’re not mad in thinking the way we do. These days I’m inspired every day by the people we come across in our community – such as Kim & Jake at Unknown Epic, Apurva at No Nasties, and Dawn at Dream Explorers. I love their energy and unwavering passion for the work they do.

The common thread is with all of these is that they’ve challenged conventional thinking about how to do business. I like rebels, those that want to cause a ruckus and have fun along the way. It takes a lot of guts to put your neck on the line and do things differently so I admire anyone that takes the risky path, not because they want to, but because they need to.
