Is Samsung Pioneering Mass Adoption of USDC?

Guest spost by Iaroslav Belkin, founder of Belkin Marketing

On July 22 at Galaxy Unpacked in London, Samsung put a stablecoin balance next to your boarding pass. That sentence sounds small. It isn’t.

Samsung Wallet is adding native stablecoin support, with a live demo showing Circle’s USDC sitting inside the same screen where you already keep payment cards, hotel keys, and loyalty points. Not a separate app you have to download, forget the password to, and eventually delete. The wallet already on your phone. The one you open to tap your card at a coffee shop. That one now, apparently, holds MiCA compliant digital dollars.

Is Samsung Pioneering Mass Adoption of USDC?

Stablecoins are tokens pegged one-to-one to the dollar, backed by cash reserves. The technology is not new. What is new is a company with a billion-device install base deciding to treat one like a current account balance. Apple hasn’t done it. Google hasn’t done it. Samsung just did, or at least announced it intends to. Those are different things, and the difference matters, and I’ll get to it.

What Lee Dinham Actually Said on Stage

Product manager Lee Dinham told the Unpacked audience Samsung Wallet will move beyond cash and savings to support new forms of digital value. The demo showed USDC with send, receive, and top-up flows, secured behind Samsung Knox, the company’s on-device encryption chip. It looked polished. It looked ready.

It isn’t ready. Not yet.

No launch date. No confirmed stablecoin issuers. No list of which blockchains will be supported. USDC appeared on the demo screen and Circle has not been publicly named as a partner. What Samsung announced is a strategic direction, which is meaningfully different from a product you can use next Tuesday. Worth holding that distinction clearly before anyone starts making decisions based on this.

What gives the announcement weight is the history behind it. Samsung has been building this infrastructure since 2019, when Knox-based crypto storage first appeared in Galaxy phones. Hardware wallet support followed in 2021. Then in October 2025, a Coinbase integration landed for 75 million U.S. Galaxy users. The stablecoin announcement did not come from nowhere. It is the next step in a build that has been running quietly for six years, which is why I take it more seriously than a typical conference announcement.

The Galaxy Card also launched the same day, issued by Barclays on Visa, with 5% cashback on direct purchases. Stablecoins plus a proprietary credit card plus six years of crypto infrastructure. This is ecosystem construction, not a feature drop.

The Distribution Problem Nobody Else Has Solved

USDC ended 2025 with $75.3 billion in circulation, up 72% year over year, and $33.3 trillion in on-chain transaction volume. Those are genuinely large numbers. They are also almost entirely institutional. Crypto rails. Settlement flows between exchanges. Not a single person at a Tuesday evening dinner splitting the bill in digital dollars.

Every app, every wallet, every exchange has taken a run at the gap between what stablecoins can do and what ordinary people actually use them for. None of them cracked mainstream because they all required the user to come to them.

But Samsung doesn’t have that problem. The wallet is already there, already used daily for completely boring things like paying for parking and storing your gym membership. If USDC lands on that same screen, the barrier to a first interaction drops to almost nothing.

That is genuinely different from anything the crypto industry has managed to build from scratch. Whether Samsung executes it is another question entirely.

Irish and EU Users: The Realistic Version

For Irish users, the honest medium-term case is this: freelancers invoicing in dollars who currently eat a 2-3% FX conversion on every payment have a real problem that stablecoins solve well. Remote workers juggling multi-currency income from a single device have the same problem. Cross-border transfers that settle in seconds rather than two banking days are genuinely useful, not theoretically useful. These are the use cases that make sense here, once the feature arrives, if the compliance layer is built correctly, and if Samsung actually follows through on what it demoed in London.

Three big ifs. Worth tracking rather than acting on yet.

What Apple and Google Do Next

They’re watching. If the rollout goes cleanly, expect a response within a year. Apple in particular has the financial infrastructure (Apple Cash, Apple Card, the Wallet app) to move quickly once it decides to. Google is messier organizationally but has the same distribution advantage. The race does not end with Samsung’s announcement. In some ways it just started.

The demo was convincing. The six-year infrastructure track record behind it is real. The regulatory timing in the U.S., with the GENIUS Act giving stablecoin issuers a clear legal path, is better than it has ever been.

Whether your next phone upgrade becomes your next banking decision depends entirely on what Samsung ships, not what it showed on stage in London. But for the first time, that question is worth asking seriously.
