 Official figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) confirm that Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) have officially claimed the top spot as Ireland’s number one fuel type for new car registrations.

The latest July data reveals an extraordinary realignment of consumer demand. Driven by the critical “262” summer registration peak, electric vehicle registrations have surged to 29,840 units year-to-date—representing a staggering 61.06% increase compared to the 18,527 units registered in the same period in 2025.

This explosive growth has propelled electric vehicles to a market-leading 26.12% market share, officially overtaking Petrol Electric Hybrids (24.59%) and pushing traditional Petrol (20.39%) and Diesel (12.45%) further down the ranks. Electric motoring is now the dominant powertrain of choice for Irish motorists in 2026.

This milestone marks the definitive end of EVs being viewed as an alternative option, firmly cementing zero-emission motoring into the mainstream Irish landscape. Driven by a rapidly expanding choice of affordable makes and models, substantial manufacturer price corrections, and enhanced consumer confidence in Ireland’s charging infrastructure, the transition has reached an unstoppable momentum.
