climate change, 201, Ireland
Is It Too Late to Change the Fate of Ireland’s World-Class Beaches?
According to a new report by Kalon Surf that evaluates climate change responsiveness among popular surfing countries. Among Ireland’s offenses is being the European Union’s top producer of plastic waste. The country generates an average of 1,306.7 kilograms of municipal solid waste per capita, more than any other country in the report.
Ireland is joined in its infamy by the United States, Australia, South Africa, and Indonesia.
Common consequences of climate change that Ireland is encountering are sea level rise, ocean acidification, shoreline erosion and coastal flooding. Popular surf spots, including Rossnowlagh, Bundoran, Aileen’s, Castlerock, and Carrowniskey, may not be around in the years to come if these changes continue moving at their current pace.
Reversing the Effects of Climate Change
If Ireland wants to change the fate of its top-notch surf spots, the time to take action is now, the report states. Since everyone contributes to the changing climate in some way, Kalon argues it’s up to each of us to make a conscious effort to join the battle against global warming. Here are a few ways the report suggests you can help.
Support Sustainable Businesses
Shop at stores and work with local businesses that practice sustainability. For some businesses, this means using recycled items in their products, for others it means purchasing local supplies to avoid emissions that result from the excessive transportation of goods.
Donate to Charities
There are many charities and environmental groups that work to protect the environment and you can help them out by contributing funds or volunteering some of your time. These organizations do everything from planting trees and cleaning up our oceans to creating new sustainable products and protecting wildlife.
Use Environmentally-friendly Products
Not all of the products we use on a daily basis are good for the environment. Many cleaning products use chemicals that are harmful to both the environment and our bodies, so switching hazardous ingredients for plant-based ingredients is better for both us and the Earth. Another option is to reduce the amount of waste you produce when purchasing plastic-derived products, such as using package-free shampoo, conditioner, and lotion bars.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Cut back on your consumption, especially that of heavily-packaged items, and take a reusable bag with you when grocery shopping. Reuse and upcycle everyday items when possible. Educate yourself on what you can recycle and place those items in a separate bin so they don’t go to a landfill.
Save Energy
Be more mindful of the energy you consume and think of ways you can save it. Turn off lights and unplug electronics when they’re not being used. Instead of letting your clothes dryer and water heater suck up energy producing hot water and drying clothes, wash your clothes in cold water and hang them to dry. Take shorter showers and switch out old light bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs. It’s easy, and often cheaper, to make these changes to conserve energy.
Decrease Emissions
Instead of driving your own car everywhere and producing unnecessary emissions, use the forms of public transportation available around you, like buses, trains and ridesharing apps like Lyft and Uber. Or you can do some old-fashioned walking or biking to reach destinations around town.
Help Spread the Word
Tell your family, friends and anyone else you know about climate change and what it’s doing to the earth. Teach others about the simple yet effective ways they can make a difference and help preserve our beaches, forests and planet as a whole.
With a little bit of effort, each of us can make a big difference in the fight against climate change.
To reach its conclusion about the worst climate change offenders in the surfing community, and have you can help curb the consequences of climate change, Kalon Surf evaluated reports by the Climate Change Performance Index, Climate Action Tracker, and other supplementary data sets.
