Interesting Investor insights with Spyro Korsanos, Global Venture Partners

1 min pitch for what you are doing now?

We have been advising the largest internet venture investors and portfolio companies in Europe in a very integrated way over the last five years. For example, we’ve helped formulate strategy and advised, negotiated and transacted more than two dozen deals for Europe’s largest food delivery company to help them expand internationally. We’ve supported them in their journey from a €1m revenue company, valued at €30m, to a €1bn revenue company, valued at €8bn.

Often, more value was generated through well structured transactions than through organic growth. This is significant because inorganic growth through vertical, horizontal or geographic expansion is a difficult thing to do in the growth tech segment, at speed, and we’ve successfully achieved it.

Now we’re seeking to invest in and advise other high-growth tech ventures with similar scalability potential. We aim to support them in developing both their strategic direction and executing inorganic growth activity, to scale rapidly.  With our integrated approach, we can support both inorganic and organic growth and we’re motivated by generating capital gain for our investors. Founders welcome our strong engagement with their businesses, which helps them to deliver accelerated growth.

We currently operate through a flexible limited partnership structure able to add new LPs for every investment, as well as add partners earning carry, to maximise the alignment of rewards.

How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?

We only commenced our new activity at the beginning of this year but we’ve had a good start with double-digit millions deployed.

What are your plans for the future?

We ultimately seek to invest where we see that our support can help drive extraordinary growth rates. We see huge opportunities in the consumer internet sector worldwide.

We look forward to investing in and supporting some exciting ventures and aim to create more tech unicorns, whether in Europe or further afield.

What will you be talking about at this event?

We are passing on our views about value-add investing. In addition to having your finger on the pulse of the market, investing requires diverse expertise from having leadership positions in both small and large companies and having experience across a variety of functions. Ultimately, we are motivated by capital gain rather than fees, which is what all founders, management teams and shareholders who are keen to have us in their shareholder base are looking for.

What inspired you to attend this event?

It’s important to the venture capital community that we, as GPs, are communicating what we see at the frontlines of tech (which now includes companies with up to billions in cash) – where we see significant opportunit and how it can be stimulated and captured to create strong investment performance. Feeding those thoughts back into the community helps both tech ventures access the type of capital they need and LPs fulfil their need for superior returns.
