In the Republic of Ireland, July, the International Indoor Air Quality Institute (IIAQI) officially unveiled its groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing indoor air quality challenges.
In recent years, indoor air quality has garnered significant attention, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. After decades of neglect, governments, institutions, and the public have become acutely aware of indoor air pollution and are actively seeking solutions.
The institute focuses on indoor air quality certification of commercial and residential spaces and professional training for IAQ assessors:
The most comprehensive IAQ certification program in the world: Our Healthy IAQ certificates offer a four-grade certification for both commercial and residential spaces and cover new and existing properties. Clients can proudly display their commitment to providing a healthy and safe indoor environment by showcasing their certificates.
Our certification program stands out for several reasons:
Scientific Grounding: Our standards are firmly rooted in scientific research and align with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.
Industry Recognition: We adhere to recognised industry standards and best practices.
Comprehensive Measurement: Our certification covers 11 essential indoor air parameters, making it the most comprehensive program globally.
Our IIAQI assessor APs (Approved Professionals)will perform the rigorous certification assessment according to our defined standards. Furthermore, the institute prides on the support provided to the professional assessors:
Professional Training: Our institute provides comprehensive training for professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of indoor air quality. Our training program will also prepare professionals to perform the assessments for our certificates, according to the written standards.
Professional Membership: Registered members will be able to advise and perform assessments for those seeking certification. Members will also gain exclusive access to a professional community forum, business opportunities, discounts, and more. Ongoing support ensures that our members stay informed and connected. For our members, the certification programme opens up various business opportunities.
At IIAQI, we firmly believe that everyone deserves clean, healthy air—regardless of where they are.

Gisela Mateus:
Born in Portugal, I’ve spent the past 13 years in Ireland, where I’ve made my home. My journey began in the financial services sector in England, but my passion led me to occupational health and safety. As a consultant, I specialised in indoor air quality, leveraging my background in psychology to create healthier environments. When I’m not working, you’ll find me exploring the outdoors, socialising, and staying active—whether it’s pilates or jogging. Beyond work, my heart belongs to my furry companions—a male dog called Evra and a female cat named Pukka.
Gonçalo Mateus:
Also hailing from Portugal, Gonçalo has immersed himself in the study of indoor air quality. His qualifications in biological engineering have been instrumental in our work. For the past 5 years, we’ve collaborated as indoor air quality consultants, driven by our shared commitment to healthier living spaces. When Gonçalo isn’t reading up on the latest research, he enjoys leisurely walks.
