“If you mix steam and ice in a cup, you’re going to make a bang. If you bring creative minds together, you can have the same effect.” That’s according to the organisers of STEAM + ICE, who are calling on Ireland’s young bright minds to get involved in their 2021 STEAM + ICE online incubator.

Organised by Trinity Walton Club and Tangent-Trinity’s Ideas Workspace, STEAM+ICE is a programme for young people interested in STEAM (science, technology, arts, engineering and maths) and teaches them ICE (innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship) skills, through a series of interactive workshops and challenges.

Running in a new flexible format, the event will go online and nationwide this September. It is open to post-primary students from 1st year through to 6th year right across Ireland. Applications for the three-week challenge open on their website today, Monday 30th August.

STEAM + ICE is traditionally delivered as a week-long incubator at Trinity College Dublin. Working together in groups, participants are challenged to find solutions to local and global issues, receiving support and advice on how to launch their own innovative start-up project. This year’s programme will feature themed tasks, workshops and lectures delivered virtually by Trinity Walton Club and Tangent, on how to design, monetise, and pitch your product to customers and investors.

The incubator will culminate with the STEAM + ICE Final Pitch Event on Wednesday, 13th October 2021 where the finalists will be invited to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The winners will receive a prize package including Trinity Walton Club scholarships, continued business mentorship from Tangent as well as their own project’s branded hoodies.

Speaking ahead of the programme launch, Kat Bauer Weiser, Interim Director of Trinity Walton Club, said: “Bringing passionate young people together through STEAM + ICE always creates a bang and year on year, we are blown away by the creative and innovative projects that emerge from the incubator. We’re very excited to see what will happen this year as we will bring together young people from all corners of Ireland.

“Students can form a team with their friends or sign up individually and have the opportunity to work with peers from anywhere in the country. As we’ve moved the programme online, we’re delighted to be able to open up this experience to so many more students this year.”

Gavan Drohan, Head of Student Entrepreneurship at Tangent, said: “This is a unique opportunity for young people who want to bring bright ideas to life and potentially solve a local or global issue in the process. Whether they’re passionate about climate change, digital literacy, or health and wellbeing, we know that young people have the potential to solve some of society’s biggest issues. This is their opportunity to shine.

“We’ll work alongside each team to guide them in design, business development and pitching skills as they develop their own ideas, advance their skill-set, and perhaps most significantly, ignite their entrepreneurial spirit.”

The STEAM+ICE online incubator is free to attend and applications are open now. Further information is available on: https://www.tcd.ie/waltonclub/steam+ice.php

STEAM + ICE is funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA).
