HTC M7 rumours

When HTC announced the “J Butterfly” it kinda caught people by surprise. It was one of the highest spec’d phones ever seen but it was released to little fan fare and restricted to the Japanese market.

Then came new of the Droid DNA, again a localised version of the phone specific to the United States.

Finally the “Butterfly” was announced, dropping the “J” and everyone thought that was the phone that would see a global release. We were wrong. Online retailer Expansys listed the Butterfly briefly but quickly had to pull the listing when HTC said the phone wouldn’t be seen outside of Asia.

So what about Europe and the other regions? Rumours that HTC were working on a high end phone called the M7 were floating about at the time but as with every rumour, it was only that. When Europe seemed to be snubbed with all of the Butterfly releases, the theory that there was an even better phone in the works started to gain some traction. It would now seem that the M7 is the phone that will get a global release and if all the leaks are to be believed it could be the one that drags HTC out of the decreasing market share and financial hole that it finds itself in right now.

HTC recently sent out invites for an event in London on February 19 where it is widely expected that the M7 will be unveiled. As most companies are realising quickly, the big trade shows are becoming a bad place to announce devices as their significance is being lost among the many other announcements from other companies. If you want your news to stand out from the crowd, dedicated events are now the chosen medium.

The purported specs for the M7 are as follows:

• 1080P 4.7″ 468ppi display
• 13MP camera
• 1.7Ghz Quad Core processor
• 2GB RAM
• Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
• Sense 5.0
• 32GB internal storage

If to be realised, it will make the M7 one of the highest spec’d Android phones on the market. That said, Android phones are evolving at an incredible pace so the M7 will not be without competition. Phones from Sony, LG and Huawei have already been announced with comparable specs and that’s before Samsung let’s us in on the specs for the Galaxy S IV.

Possibly because of HTC’s close ties with Android dating back to the Nexus One, they are held with a certain regard among Android fans and above any other company, people want to see them get back to the top. They have been heading in the right direction of late with some solid phones released such as the One X+ and the Droid DNA, but we wait for February 19 to see if this will finally be the one that get’s them there.
