How to ensure complete safety and security of your smart home with a VPN

IoT or the Internet of Things has started revolutionising not just the way people interact with the technology these days, but also how they perform their day-to-day tasks. While at one time our mom used to wake up early in the morning, make some coffee for our dad, then wake us up to get us ready for school, nowadays the coffeemaker knows when to start preparing freshly ground coffee, a notification can be sent to dad when it’s ready and we can be woken up through pre-set and self-activated alarms!

You may not be aware but the constantly connected smart devices like home automation systems, kitchen appliances, televisions, thermostats etc. communicate with the Internet at all times. This isn’t safe as anything and everything connected to the Internet can be hacked. One of the ways to make these devices connect securely to the Internet is through use of a Virtual Private Network or a VPN. Let’s tell you how such VPNs can help. Before getting to that, here you’ll find reviews of some of the top-rated VPNs used all over the world for this purpose.

About VPNs

A Virtual Private Network or a VPN enables you to connect securely to your home network from any location in the world. While these VPNs constantly encrypt information sent to/from your devices, they can also be used for creation of a private connection between a trusted network (which in this case would be your home network) and yourself.

Once this private connection is established with the help of a VPN, you can easily turn down/up the thermostat, check the security cameras and/or turn your washing machine off without worrying about anyone else on the Internet being able to do the same.

As a result, you’d be able to limit the use of your smart appliances to your home network only, without exposing any of them to the World Wide Web. However, those appliances would still be at accessible to you from anywhere in the world, through your home network and an efficient VPN.

Which VPN to use? And other considerations

You can go through the premium VPN services reviewed on the website linked-to earlier (in the second paragraph) and use any of them to get the job done.

Please note, you’d still need to set up port forwarding if any of those smart devices require Internet access for their own needs, such as feature improvements and updates. But if all you need is to be able to remotely access these devices, a VPN provides an excellent means to control who all can connect to these devices and when. Thereafter, you can easily supervise those smart devices whenever they need access to the Internet, by making manual changes.

Furthermore, please note, no matter which exact tool you use to secure your home, you can still employ a VPN to keep your connected home devices safe, behind a home firewall, and accessible through the Internet only when connected through the home network.
