How the New Asian Emission Laws/Regulations Will Impact UK and Irish based Manufacturing Companies
By Alfred Richardson
New Asian Emission Laws – What You Need to Know
Due to the ever-increasing emissions throughout Asian countries, the regulatory bodies have looked to reduce emissions and their impact on the environment. This has resulted in enforcing laws and obligations from businesses manufacturing in Asia to reduce their dust collection, carbon footprint and emissions, especially within surrounding suburban areas.
For those who aren’t aware, BS6 is the new emission summit for regulations around machinery based and automotive operations across Indian countries, which will be implemented in 2020.
The new regulations highlight five core emission regulations that need to be adhered to by businesses. In a nutshell, the regulations are:
Manufacturing units should not emit dusts into the atmosphere above anything under 7.5mg per Nm3 or 10 mg per Nm3 depending on the area it sits within.
Certain gases need to be contained or filtered before being thrown out. Gases such as SO2, SO3, HF.
Particles emitted based on type, such as ‘fine’ have limits to the total amount of particles that can be emitted.
Oils and gas particulates must be captured during the time of emission, rather than after manufacturing.
All boiler-based applications must use built in dust collectors to ensure that high temperature practices can be caught on site.
These new regulations will now impact UK businesses and how they operate with Asian manufactures.
What Do These Regulations Mean for Businesses?
Businesses and manufacturers working with companies in Asian countries now must understand how this indirectly impacts their businesses.
Due to the changes to regulations, understanding these regulations and the resulting innovations to technology, working processes and manufacturing systems will help you to identify how this impacts your businesses commercially.
For an Asian manufacturing business to now operate under these new regulations, investing in innovative technology, emission processes and production will naturally inherit additional costs to their top and bottom lines. For UK businesses, this will also affect their revenue and margin, too, as some manufacturers will look to pass some, if not all the additional costs onto the paying customer.
There will need to be a common middle ground met between European businesses and Asian production units to achieve a happy medium because of this additional cost.
On a more positive note, with innovative production units, more efficient and productive processes can yield a higher supply chain for UK businesses to receive resources more quickly and effectively, which can improve their overall customer experience.
Specifically speaking, this works well for industries requiring conveyor belt systems. For a business working with a conveyor belt manufacturer such as ClipOn, this allows for an even smoother supply chain process during the manufacturing and delivery of the belt system.
Finally, a non-commercial benefit of the new emission regulations for UK businesses is the social impact. Trends show that consumers are heavily focused on social good; especially with the impact on the environment. For businesses to thrive in the modern era, a conscious policy around their social and environment impact is key to improving positive public relations.
The Innovations to Technology and What this Means for Your Business
Because of the upcoming BS6 manufacturers have been continually researching and developing their systems, machinery and technology. The resulting improvements have been made across air filtration systems, dust extractors, filter bag technology and filter cages.
More specifically, for filter bags, the media has been increased in density to consume more dust particles, with very little leakage. Further design advances have increased the bag collar to increase air pressure throughout the collection system.
Additionally, the bag media’s contact surface area within the air filter has been tweaked to improve the contact to surface area, which allows for a reduction in missing dust upon collection.
For air cages, during removal and cleaning of the bag, the pressure has been tweaked to ensure that longer lifespan of filter media is achieved, allowing for a commercial and logistical improvement to the extraction process.
Next Steps for UK Businesses Manufacturing in India and other Asian countries
Moving forward, if UK businesses will need to become aware of Bharat Stage 6 Emission Norms when entering into partnerships with Indian manufacturers. Ensuring you’re up-to-speed with BS6 regulations will get you ahead of the game, allowing you to prepare accordingly.
If your manufacturing partner hasn’t contacted you about these regulations yet, the next port of call is to contact them to understand the environmental and commercial impact this may have on your business.
Plan… always plan, and plan for the commercial, logistical and social impacts the new changes will have on your business. Planning should include mapping out manufacturers you should be working with or moving to that will be up-to-scratch with the BS6 regulations from the get go.
Further planning on revenue and bottom line streams in relation to running costs should also be considered, along with a marketing strategy around your social and environmental impact improvements, working in tandem with Bs6 regulations.
