Over time, technology has acquired an increasingly larger role in sport. Across many popular sports, technology intervenes in the play to try and arrive at the correct decision. Necessary in the eyes of some, controversial and unnecessary in the eyes of others. But while rule makers, teams, players, and fans alike continue to debate the influence of technology in sport, the impact of tech has undoubtedly had a positive impact on an increasingly popular way to interact with sports.
Sports betting has enhanced its reputation in recent years, with technology largely responsible for creating innovations that have boosted engagement and profile of betting. But while tech such as VAR is slowing down the game of football, the influence of tech in sports betting is providing quicker, real-time options that are introducing new ways to interact with football and other popular sports in Ireland.
One of the biggest tech revelations in recent years is the arrival of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into everyday working processes. AI has been present in the background for decades, but only now is the world fully appreciating its application and the support it can provide. For sports betting in Ireland, the ability of AI to rapidly collect and assess large batches of data has proved pivotal in the offerings and features that can then be created by crafty designers.
The data input provided by AI has contributed heavily to the seamless operation of the in-play betting market. With the data and information crunched by AI, algorithms and predictive models can then get to work to create odds that represent the next major action to take place. In some sports, such as tennis and cricket, this could be the next ball or point. The implementation of AI has brought an immediacy to sports betting that can help fill those moments waiting for a VAR decision.
Another innovation, albeit not so recent, that is transforming the way sports fans interact with their favourite sports is mobile technology. Mobile phones have already established themselves as essential items in everyday life. But mobile phone technology has now reached the stage where it can do significantly more than send photos and videos, enable instant money transfers, and direct people on long journeys.
Nowadays, with impressive processing units, state-of-the-art graphics cards and seamless touchscreen navigation, mobile phones have become minicomputers capable of streaming live sport as well as powering dynamic betting models such as live betting. Furthermore, with innovative features like live casino play emerging down the other gambling branch on online casinos, advances in technology are also promoting the growth of these platforms and the range of casino classics within them.
Alongside reduced waiting times, mobile phones offer a more portable route to online gambling operators. Companies are now placing more emphasis on their mobile experiences due to the greater amount of time spent by people in Ireland in the digital realm. Technology is giving sports betting and online casino play a greater presence in everyday life and has also provided more flexibility in when players choose to interact with these platforms.
For sports and gambling, the integration of technology is a constant work in progress. Both are working feverishly to unlock tech’s full potential and explore all beneficial avenues that can be integrated. There is, of course, the possibility that some tech might not be appropriate or of any benefit. However, we have seen the impact AI and mobile phones have already had on the sports industry, including sports betting. With heightened expectations, the world is already looking forward to the next innovation.
