How can women successfully navigate the male-dominated technology industry

Guest post by Huwaida, Circularise, Head of People & Talent Acquisition

Throughout my professional life and due to many factors I was usually amongst the few females in the room, and as I progressed through the career ladder the issue became more acute as I was the only female in the leadership team ; while my role as Head of People is not tech specific I do work in a tech company so the challenges I faced & obstacles I had to overcome can be applicable to women who specifically work in tech.

How can women successfully navigate the male-dominated technology industry

Navigating the tech industry as a woman comes with its unique set of challenges but it can also be highly rewarding. While recently we see that the tech scene for females is changing ( albeit at a slower pace than expected and hoped for ) there are nonetheless many opportunities and advancements in the field, and while there still exists gender disparities and biases to contend with; as more women are entering the tech world the situation is only bound to improve.

From my personal experience I share some tips that have helped me in my journey in navigating a male dominated work landscape:

Develop a network of support

Build relationships with other professionals in the field that can support , guide and mentor you; Connect with other women in tech through networking events, online communities, and professional organizations.

Be your best ambassador

No one knows you better than you, so don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself and what value you bring to the table. Don’t let imposter syndrome or negative perceptions deter you from pursuing your goals.

Determination to succeed

In order to succeed in the tech world you will need to focus on the following

Be assertive – Don’t be afraid to speak up and share your ideas. In meetings and discussions, contribute your insights and opinions confidently.

Be persistent – Recognize that challenges may arise and success will not come easy, but don’t let obstacles deter you from your path and rather use it to your advantage as something to propel you even further.

Be resilient – Stay resilient, keep pushing forward, and use setbacks as learning opportunities.

Pay it forward

Once you reach a position of influence, advocate for inclusive policies and practices that promote more women in tech, ensure that you support younger juniors with guidance and mentorship opportunities.

Be hungry for learning

The tech world is changing at warp speed so you need to ensure you are continuously improving your technical knowledge by staying up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies and investing in your education and skills. Being confident in your skills will help you overcome stereotypes and biases.

Don’t be afraid to take risks

Don’t shy away from new opportunities if they’re offered to you even if you think you’re not 100% ready and remember if someone offers you an opportunity it’s because they see potential in you.

Address unconscious bias

Unfortunately, gender bias exists in the tech industry. It’s crucial to address it when you encounter it. Rather than berate or get defensive it’s better to engage & educate colleagues about it as people may not be aware of their biases, and open conversations can lead to positive change.

Celebrate your success

Women in general tend to understate their achievements and successes so as not to be perceived as arrogant, but there is no reason stopping you from celebrating and acknowledging your achievements: Recognize and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Acknowledging your successes will not only boost your confidence and motivation but encourage other women to do the same.

On a final note, always remember that being a woman in tech is an asset as you offer a unique viewpoint, and your contributions are essential for the industry’s growth and success. Stay true to yourself, and don’t be discouraged by any obstacles you may encounter. With perseverance and support, you can thrive and make a significant impact in the tech world.

But above all remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day , setbacks are part and parcel of daily life , and that you are a big part of building an even better environment for all the young girls in STEM today who will no doubt be the future leaders of tomorrow.
