Last spring Irish Tech News attended the European Phocuswright event in Dublin to see a great range of innovative ideas in the travel tech sector. Since then Phocuswright has continued to move around the working looking to encourage innovation and cutting edge technologies. Micheal Collins from Travel Media Europe attended the latest event in Florida and reported back on it for us (tough gig …).

Last month Phocuswright hosted its biggest conference to date, with 1900 delegates attending.

Phocuswright is unique in the travel and tech industry in that it attracts all the top CEO as well as hundreds of start-up, of which this year over 50 competed in the Travel Innovation Summit.

For example, on the Wednesday afternoon of the conference the CEOs of Expedia, HomeAway, TripAdvisor, Accor Hotels, Hipmunk, Skyscanner, Kayak, Momondo but to name a few, were all up stage being quizzed by Phocuswright researchers and then afterwards were mingling on the floor, checking out the next generation of start-ups.

At no other conference do 20 something young-guns rub shoulders with the captains of industry. Perhaps this is indicative of the speed and frequency of change in the travel tech space – disruptive start-ups can quickly become game changing giants overnight. As Expedia Inc’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi put it, “no one should be sitting comfortably in their chairs”.

In this playlist we interview start-ups, established players and some of those who presented and won at the Travel Innovation Summit.
