Grafton Street to transform into a Mathematical Wonderland for ‘Maths in the City’

Come join in the fun at Grafton Street for an exciting Maths Quest Treasure Hunt as well as interesting puzzles and games on Saturday, October 14th, 2017.

Maths in the City will be in St. Stephen’s Green and top of Grafton Street.

Grafton Street will be transformed into a mathematical wonderland on Saturday 14^th October, as ‘Maths in the City’ kicks off to celebrate the launch of Maths Week Ireland 2017 from 11 am.  Members of the public will be put to the test as they will be challenged with puzzles, teasers and games – all aimed at changing people’s perceptions of maths.

Maths in the City will see shoppers entertained by maths presenters including Fernando Blasco, Andrew Jeffrey, Doug Buchanan, Caroline Ainslie, Christian Mercat, Pedro Lealdino, James Soper as well as students from Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Waterford Institute of Technology and Oxford and Lyon universities.

Franz Schlindwein of Qubizm will also be hosting a fun filled Maths Quest Treasure Hunt where one lucky participant will win €500 by figuring out six puzzle blocks which will be located in various windows on Grafton Street.

Maths Week Ireland 2017 kicks off on Saturday, 14^th October and runs until Sunday 22^nd October. Now in its twelfth year, over a quarter of a million people are expected to take part in events across the country, both north and south. In addition to the events organised by Maths Week, schools and clubs across the country will run their own events aimed at encouraging young people to have confidence in their maths ability.

Speaking ahead of Maths in the City, Eoin Gill, Maths Week Coordinator said: “Maths Week is an all island initiative that aims to promote a more positive image of maths. Last year, over 300,000 people took part in Maths Week 2016 making it the biggest festival of maths promotion worldwide.

“Each year, Maths in the City helps us bring maths to the street, so people who are not aware of events happening locally can still get involved and realise that maths can be fun and entertaining for everyone. I would encourage everyone to pop along on the day to test any preconceived idea they may have about maths.”
