As the first week of the general election campaign comes to an end Google has released the top trending searches on Google for political parties and party leaders over the last six months as well as election related search terms since the election was announced on February 3rd.

Google search data over the last week shows that those searching online want to know: ‘When is the election in Ireland?’ ‘Which constituency am I in?’ ‘Who should I vote for?’ and the top questions on political parties include  ‘Who set up Fine Gael?’, ‘What does Fianna Fail mean?’ and ‘Who founded Sinn Fein?’.

“The amount of traffic a search term generates cannot be used to accurately gauge the true popularity of a candidate or political party, however it is a useful way of measuring interest in them at any one time,” explained Ronan Harris, VP and Head of Google in Ireland. “It shows that people are engaged and interested. Particularly around the big campaign moments like manifesto launches or televised debates, people go straight to the internet to look up policies, stances etc.”
