It is here, and it is something that many people seem to easily understand what the purpose of it is, and the interesting use cases it can offer you. At the same time you will need to consider the implications of constantly recording your outside environment and where you will be storing all of that data. Or rather how much it will cost you to do so, as Google already have the paid for solution to these data storage needs.
Google Nest Cam
Initially the idea of having a camera, aligned with your Google Nest Doorbell make a lot of sense. It does mean you can be notified and answer the door when anyone calls, even if you are somewhere else far far away – as long as you have a working internet connection. It certainly seems slick, and durable, as it will be outside. From a business development point of view it certainly makes sense for Google to continue to mine and develop the Nest suite of potential business applications.
It does give you security, sort of, for example does it help if you are somewhere with no internet access and someone is breaking into your home. A bit like house alarms that constantly go off while the owners are away it does not necessarily prevent the bad thing happening to your home. It might be able to tell the difference from your dog and your family, but how much data does it need to operate and how and where will it all be stored, and at whose cost? Also supposed a train dog or other animal is used to bypass your security systems?
The device itself is well designed, sleek, and works on that level, but it would be good to have a more detailed insight into who owns the data, how it might be used and who is able to access it.
