GirlCrew announce ‘1 Pay Day Away’ fundraiser

Irish startup, GirlCrew, is kickstarting a new campaign “1 Pay Day Away” this week to highlight the reality of living in Ireland’s rental crisis – with the funds going to Inner City Helping Homeless. Alongside fundraising efforts GirlCrew is also calling on people to share their experiences with the crisis – be it struggling to find places to rent, rents skyrocketing, having to move in with friends/family, or accessing emergency services – in 10-15sec video clips using #1PayDayAway.

GirlCrew co-founder, Áine Mulloy said “We know the struggle of trying to rent in Dublin, over the last couple of years the amount I’m paying has almost doubled. We know of members desperately seeking accommodation, oftentimes with children to cater for too. I can’t imagine what it must be like to be homeless, but I do know what it’s like to feel like you are slipping towards the edge. I think lots of us do. In reality there are lots of us who are only a paycheck or two away from being homeless. What would you do if you lost your job, or your landlord decided to sell?

It’s up to all of us to do our bit to help change our society for the better. With this fundraiser we’re hoping to highlight that this crisis is something that impacts us all, and to help give direct support to those in need.”

Recent figures from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government puts homeless in Ireland at 9,846 with
close to 4,000 children in State-funded emergency accommodation. By working directly with an on the ground service such as ICHH, the “1 Pay Day Away” campaign is hoping to bring aid to those who need it as they need it. With the season changing resources will be stretched and community support is more important than ever.

Brian McLoughlin from ICHH had this to say, “ICHH are delighted to be partnering with GirlCrew and we really look forward to working alongside them over the next few months. As a non funded, volunteer run charity we rely on partnerships like this to keep our 7 day frontline advocacy and outreach going as we continue the fight against homelessness in Ireland.” With this campaign the groups hope to give a voice to so many and highlight how the current crisis is affecting us all.
