Mobilising the general public is key in manifesting strong and lasting positive social change, NYADO

What is your own background briefly?

NYADO’s co-founders Edoardo and Idan have similar backgrounds in music production. Edoardo is an Italian artist, science writer, singer, song-writer, producer. Idan is an Israeli singer, violist, producer and entrepreneur.

Our team members come from diverse backgrounds such as impact production and campaigns, filmmaking, media & entertainment, music & live performing, international development and social entrepreneurship.

NYADO is a melting pot of backgrounds: we are an international collective of artists and innovators who come together under the shared goal of fostering positive social and environmental change through music & visual arts. Not only do we come from different parts of the world, but we also have different educational and life backgrounds and NYADO serves as a bridging platform where a new type of interaction between the industries happens. This is our strongest and most beautiful trait: bringing different people together to work for a common goal through a constant flow of international sharing of knowledge.

Social change with NYADO

Does it seem like a logical background to what you do now with NYADO?

Totally. We believe that NYADO’s multidisciplinary nature reflects our backgrounds. Music plays a major part but it is not the whole picture. We establish partnerships with global social changemakers, we make music and short films inspired by their stories, then we develop impact campaigns to engage people in a strong call to action, while distributing our music-films worldwide. We make the most out of each collaboration and partnership we develop.

All this work requires a very broad skillset, which is why we looked out for and managed to bring along teammates from extremely diverse backgrounds; from sustainability advisors working in the UN, to business people, to fellow artists and even more. For instance, the production of our first music-film, Mission to Earth, was done by more than 100 people from very different parts of the world and very different educational and life backgrounds.

Our content is designed to be global – universally accessible by different ages and cultures. So having an international and diverse team is the ideal and most successful formula that we constantly try to fuel and strengthen as we grow NYADO. The achievement of an agenda such as positive mass entertainment fostering measurable sustainable impact and engagement of a global audience is possible only by the joint effort of a multidisciplinary team of experts.

When did NYADO start and what happened since then?

NYADO was founded in 2018 with the production of Mission to Earth in Kenya and Italy. Since then the group evolved from a scattered multitude of collaborators to a strong core team of 20 creative innovators working across Europe, East Africa, Middle-East, US and Australia.

2019 was an incredible year for NYADO. In May, Mission to Earth was premiered at the UN’s Global Festival of Action in Bonn, Germany. Our intervention in the event comprised of a live musical performance, screening and presentation of the film, by NYADO co-founders, Phy and Italian changemaker Marco Attisani.

Two months later, in June, the music-film was previewed at the Social Business Day in Bangkok, in November at the Global Social Business Summit of Peace Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus in Berlin, and in December at the Monaco 2019 Peace and Sport summit. The Mission to Earth music-film and impact campaign were officially launched online on 02.02.2020.

The impact campaign includes a series of inspiring videos to showcase the good things happening on Earth. Every Sunday NYADO is presenting a new pioneer – a changemaker, an artist or an activist – on the screens of the Mission to Earth spaceship. We call it the Mission to Earth series, a sequel where the story continues from when the astronauts get back on Earth and start scouting for relevant solutions to climate change and social inequalities. Here you can find an introduction to the campaign on our social media, presented by Mission to Earth singer Phy.

The other part of our impact campaign is that we developed an educational toolkit for learning facilitators and educators that draws on Mission to Earth music-film, introducing important topics like environmentalism, the global goals for sustainable development, social entrepreneurship and social media activism to young people all over the world. We are currently partnering with educational organizations, offering the toolkit as a free resource.

Following Mission to Earth we have recently entered pre-production of ‘GATHER’- a new music-film in partnership with global social enterprise Plastic Bank. We will release the GATHER music-film and campaign on all our channels after summer 2020!

1 min pitch for what you are doing now / how will NYADO help the planet?

NYADO is a social production house. We are an international collective of influential artists and changemakers making anthems for change, music-films and impact campaigns to amplify the stories and ideas of 21st century’s most inspiring pioneers.

Each music-film features international influential artists and innovative futuristic solutions, and the story of the pioneers that created them. Each music-film focuses on a specific field, from climate action to plastic revolution, artificial intelligence or sustainable fashion.

Society can be changed on a massive scale if we introduce new ideas through popular culture. In a moment of global crisis such as the one we’re facing now, what we need isn’t a scattered account of the problems, but rather a united portrait of the amazing solutions that many of us are creating.

But people are too distracted by movies, series and Saturday night clubbing to pay attention to documentaries about these things. NYADO aims at bringing these positive stories to the general public through cool music and futuristic film. We strive to become the Netflix of sustainability, the Marvel of positive impact, the Disney of innovation.

Why do you think it is such a powerful idea to achieve change in this way?

Mobilizing the general public is key in manifesting strong and lasting positive social change. Mainstream media has the ability to achieve that, yet it still hasn’t realized its full potential. The music industry in general, and pop music in particular, usually carry superficial and rather materialistic messages, instead of content that could unite people promoting constructive values and inspiring narratives for a global community.

We believe it’s extremely important for people to embrace their role in changing their worldview and improving their reality, helping to solve everyone’s global and local challenges. As a universal language, music can break barriers and create a direct channel between people and shared visions – which is exactly what we are trying to tap into. By combining engaging music – singable and danceable anthems – with visually compelling stories, heroic futuristic characters and an impactful campaign, we want to inspire people and mobilize them to take action.

Our anthems take inspiration from different cultures, genres and symbols in order to expand our music’s reach and penetrate parts of the global population that are usually being left out from global discussions. We connect the west to the east, the north to the south, and try to unite communities and individuals around content that is relevant to every person on our planet.

Who and where do you get inspiration from?

Everyone in NYADO is somehow a futurist. We love TED Talks, but the problem with TED Talks is that only people who watch TED Talks, watch TED Talks! So we use every available platform to research the most relevant challenges in our world and what the solutions are, the positive mindsets and projects that are working to improve it. Once we find the people or the organizations that we want to focus on featuring, we approach them and we try to involve them in our production as vision and impact partners.

In addition, the artists in NYADO work together with the social entrepreneurs, which means that they constantly inspire each other with new ways of creating change. The impact director leads the research on the ground as part of the pre-production of our music-films, while the music and film producers study the global and local trends to craft universal anthems and stories that can resonate with as many people as possible around the world.

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?

NYADO embraces sci-fi and fantasy storytelling to reimagine these projects and turn them into legends. There is lots of noise about sci-fi and fantasy being cultural genres that take people away from reality in a dangerous and escapist way. Our belief, backed up by others, is that looking at the future, or the present, with a pinch of magic and enhancing spectacles, can actually inspire people and give them new ideas and energy that they would normally lack, sinking into daily routine and struggles in a distracting, nihilistic and numbing society.
