GDPR is just over a year old and as we know its greatest tests are yet to come. Helen Dixon the Data protection commissioner, who recently signed on for another 5 year term will decide if there should be fines imposed on some of the world’s biggest tech companies such as Facebook and Google. At the moment there are 54 investigations underway and later this year we will know more about some of these investigations. Fines are 4% of turnover or €20M whichever is greater so it will be interesting to see what happens.
It is also worth noting that there is also a new book on the market entitled Data Protection Compliance: A Guide to GDPR and Irish Data Protection Law by barrister Laura Keogh. Its publication is timely, and you can bet your house that many companies are not fully data protection compliant. I got a sneak preview of the book and it is quite an eye opener
Perusing through the book I was surprised about how much information, and advice was crammed into this 300 page book. With 22 chapters divided into four parts, the author provides very helpful information, including where necessary diagrams and instruction charts on how to be compliant for all things data protection related. This book is highly recommended for anyone wanting up-to-date information on data protection, how to become compliant and how to avoid eye watering fines! Published by Clarus Press, 2019, retails at €45 and available in specialist bookshops or from the publisher www.claruspress.ie
