Nineteen events are taking place around Ireland this week as part of GDPR Awareness Week to highlight the implementation of the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) due to be introduced next year.

The events and awareness seminars for SME’s will be held in Cork, Sligo, Dublin and elsewhere during GDPR Awareness Week. A GDPR Summit, organised by the GDPR Awareness Coalition will be held at TechConnect Live on the last day of GDPR Awareness week in the RDS, Dublin on the 31st May. Organisers are seeking to encourage Irish SME’s to take necessary steps to prepare themselves for the new regulation ahead of 2018.

Entry to the GDPR Summit at TechConnect Live is free of charge and companies can find out more about events taking place as part of GDPR Awareness Week at

A recent report by Mazars and McCann Fitzgerald last August found that 84% of Irish companies had not taken steps to comply with GDPR requirements even though 82% of companies agreed that meeting GDPR requirements by 2018 would be challenging.

“Thousands of Irish businesses will be affected by the introduction of GDPR next year and only a small percentage of those have taken steps to ensure they are compliant. A lot of businesses don’t realise it could deal a serious blow to their business operations. It affects email marketing lists, employee records, client and customer files.”

“We’re launching GDPR Awareness Week to encourage businesses to start taking action now while there is still time to minimise its impact on the Irish business community. The EU are very serious about enforcing this law so it could result in fines for businesses that fail to take action or are reported for data breaches.” Garry Connolly, Founder of the GDPR Awareness Coalition said.

Ten panels will take place at the GDPR Summit at TechConnect Live exploring topics related to the reality of GDPR for businesses with speakers including Dr. Dennis Jennings, Chair, GDPR Coalition, Keith O’Leary, Principal Consultant, Sungard Availability Services, Joan Mulvihill, Centre Director, Irish Centre for Cloud Computing and Commerce, DCU and Gordon Wade of KPMG Legal Services.

Recommendations for Irish SME’s

Internet Hall of Fame Pioneer and Chairperson of the GDPR Awareness Coalition, Dr.Dennis Jennings, will be chairing the GDPR Summit at TechConnect Live this year.

“We’re recommending that companies review their data handling procedures and policies to make sure they’re compliant. They will need to ensure that they are getting the right permissions to record and use data and it’s also going to be important to train staff on the new regulations and what it means for their teams and their roles. We’ve created a series of articles and infographics on our website to help businesses with these questions.” Dr. Jennings said.

GDPR Awareness Coalition

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Awareness Coalition is a not-for-profit, fixed-term initiative designed to assist in raising awareness of the data privacy obligations for companies resulting from the implementation of the GDPR. The coalition consists of 109 partners including GDPR experts such as BH Consulting, Frontier Privacy, Barbican, Irish Tech News and large companies such as Fujitsu and Vodafone.

The GDPR is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information of individuals within the European Union (EU). The establishment of the GDPR awareness coalition was motivated by the growing concern that GDPR awareness throughout Ireland is unbalanced among enterprise, construction and retail sectors. For more information about this initiative or to get involved as an active Coalition Partner, please email [email protected].
