Fun interview with Muchaneta Kapfunde Founding Editor-in-Chief of FashNerd @FashNerd, A Digital Magazine That Provides Intelligent Tech News Content and Unites Pioneering Tech Minds In Fashion & Lifestyle.

1 minute pitch, what’s your goal, what stories are you looking to tell?

My objective is to take a relatable approach to fashion and lifestyle tech, whilst writing about technology in a way that inspires and stimulates.

The stories that FashNerd is looking to tell are the kind that will speak to the fashion insiders, start-up founders, entrepreneurs and fashion tech enthusiasts. We want our stories to be the kind that is accessible, intelligent and conversation starters. We love being able to keep our finger on the pulse of both Fashion and Lifestyle technology so as to ensure that we can deliver relevant news as it happens.

Who is your audience? Male / female / geeks, or much much more?

Our audience consists of 54% Male and 46% Female with an interest in Fashion (62%) and Technology (38%).  They are the pioneers and innovators- the inventors, the well informed early adopters – the tech enthusiasts, and those with a natural thirst to learn more- the tech curious.

We believe that our audience appreciates FashNerd’s approach of speaking to them in a way that is easy for everyone to understand without loosing the vital information that we are sharing with them.

How was the last 12 months? What were your big wins?

FashNerd launched in January 2015, so this is month 7 and so far FashNerd has successfully been fulfilling a niche by taking a different approach to how we deliver our news.

Our big news so far centres on FashNerd’s #WearableTechStylist, the first of its kind. The WearableTechStylist challenges the perception that wearables cannot be fashionable. Our objective continues to be about integrating wearable technology in way that will make it appeal to the masses in a fashionable way.

Our other big news was the launch of FashNerd’s shoppable tech edit. FashNerd created a shopping guide that introduced consumers to technology that is available for them to buy. It was presented in a way that would appeal to the majority of consumers. We made sure that it was a convenient guide that would allow them to shop the item directly from the edit.

Anything you’d do differently?

When it comes to FashNerd, what I would have done differently is that I would have started it earlier. I have always had an interest in the merging of Fashion and Technology but I took my time putting pen to paper.

Plans for next year?

We see FashNerd partnering up with brands who are unafraid to be pioneers. We want to ensure that Fashion Tech will not become yesterday’s news, but will grow from strength to strength until it becomes the norm.

How much are you tech / how much are you fashion, how do you balance the two?

I come from a Fashion background and I have a passion of technology, FashNerd was born of both. When it comes to the makeup of FashNerd, we try to keep it at a 50/50 balance- 50% Fashion Tech and 50% Lifestyle Tech.

What future trends are you excited about?

I am excited for Fashion Tech to become more than just a trend. I feel that it is not currently being taken seriously enough. FashionTech to me is more than a jacket that lights up, it is successfully using technology to make a difference when it comes to sustainable fashion, health and lifestyle.

Which cities are at the forefront for innovative fashion / tech designs?

Although many will assume London or New York City, I am more about the country the Netherlands. It seems that most of the praised fashion tech designers hail from Arnhem, Amsterdam and Eindhoven. There are Dutch designers like Iris van Herpen, Anouk Wipprecht and Pauline van Dongen who, in my eyes, have more than earned their ‘pioneers of fashion technology’ status.

What tech do you wish was already invented / available to you?

I would love to see nanotechonology embedded into fabrics because who wants a device attached to their clothing. The possibilities of nanotechnology are endless. Your clothing will not only be fashionable but it will also make fashion more sustainable and also be quite beneficial in the context of health, think viral detection and UV protection.  So far, when it comes to fashion, Dropel are currently using this technology to create smart fabrics, so my wish might just be granted sooner rather than later.

Your strategies for managing online / offline, work/life challenge?

My passion is my main driving force, but it does help coming from a Fashion PR background where the ability to successfully juggle work/life was a pre-requisite and lucky for me it is now now part of my ‘DNA’.

Anything we should have asked you / you’d like to add?

Well, I guess you could have asked what stories we are currently working on, but I guess now you will have to wait and find out with everyone else!
