European Union Contest for Young Scientists, Dublin 2018

Please “Save the Date” for the 30^th European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) which runs from 14-19 September and will be held in the RDS, Dublin. The Contest is the annual showcase of the best of European and international student scientific achievements and gives students the opportunity to compete with the best of their contemporaries at European level.

This is Ireland’s second time to host the event, due in no small part to the success of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE) and the organisation behind the Exhibition. The EUCYS runs for a total of six days with the venue open to the public on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday (14-16 September, from 10am to 4pm). 139 competitors from 38 countries around the world will showcase their amazing work through 90 different projects across ten categories. The 2018 winner of the BTYSTE, Simon Meehan, will represent Ireland at the event and will hopefully add to Ireland’s fantastic record in the contest. Ireland have won first prize 14 times over the past 29 years at EUCYS. Tickets for EUCYS are free and available to order from the website now.

About EUCYS: The European Union (EU) Contest for Young Scientists, an initiative of the European Commission, was set up to promote the ideals of co-operation and interchange between young scientists. The EU Contest for Young Scientists is part of the Science with and for Society activities managed by the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission and is organised in Ireland by Young Scientist and Technology of the Year limited and is supported by the Department of Education and Skills, Science Foundation Ireland, and BT.

EUCYS & the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition: The overall winner of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition goes forward to compete in EUCYS each year. Ireland’s success in the European competition is unparalleled with our young students winning first prize 14 times over the past 29 years. Organisers of the BTYSTE will be taking part in and attending EUCYS this year to highlight the many benefits of entering the national exhibition and encouraging even more young people to submit an entry to the upcoming BTYSTE which takes place from 9-12 January 2019.

Two fantastic Special Acts are scheduled for the Public Days:

• Psychologist James Soper will be performing his “Your beautiful biased brain” show. This interactive show will literally turn your world upside down, where you’ll learn about the in-brain imaging and research in an attempt to blow your mind.
• Sue McGrath aka “Scientific Sue” will bring spectators on the most historical and creative journey of discovery as she draws inspiration from Cressida Cowell’s, “How to Train your Dragon”, and introduces you to her very own fire breathing dragons.
