Six high-potential start-ups and eight established Irish companies will be hosted by Enterprise Ireland at the Ireland Pavilion Stand at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona this week. The Congress, which runs from Monday 26th February to Friday 1st March, is the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry and this year’s event is expected to attract over 100,000 visitors representing mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers, vendors and content owners from across the world.
Drawing on this year’s theme ‘Mobile is creating a better future’, the 14 Enterprise Ireland client companies exhibiting at the Ireland Pavilion will demonstrate how their communications technology can solve industry problems, such as improving network security and the lives of consumers, and add value for operators and businesses.
A number of Irish companies will be making announcements at the Congress. Online safety technology company ‘iKydz’ will be unveiling an exciting new product on Tuesday, while mobility solutions provider Cubic Telecom will also be making an announcement during the week. Another Enterprise Ireland client company ‘Asavie’, who will have a separate stand at the Congress, will be announcing a new partnership with Cork-based start-up Solo Energy.
With six billion smartphones expected to be in use by 2020, according to IHS Markit, the Irish companies attending the Mobile World Congress are developing innovative technologies which are supporting the ever-growing demand for instant communications and mobile commerce.
Minister of State with responsibility for natural resources, community affairs and digital development, Sean Kyne, T.D., who will be visiting the Ireland Pavilion during the week, commented: “The Irish companies exhibiting at Mobile World Congress are fitting ambassadors of Ireland’s highly-regarded mobile technology industry, providing innovative solutions to a range of commercial and consumer needs with the strong backing of Enterprise Ireland. Their presence at the Congress is testament to their global ambition, and I look forward to meeting the various Irish representatives in person during the week. The Government will continue to provide, along with Enterprise Ireland, the necessary support for Irish companies to win business abroad and create jobs here at home.”
Neill O’Donnellan, Manager, ICT and International Services, Enterprise Ireland, commented: “Enterprise Ireland is delighted to support the 14 Irish companies attending this year’s Mobile World Congress. The Congress is an excellent platform for Irish companies to showcase their leading-edge technologies to a diverse international audience. They will have the opportunity to meet potential buyers, take part in networking events and demonstrate their quality offering to international companies. Enterprise Ireland’s presence at the Congress via the Irish Pavilion Stand is a very visible example of our commitment to driving Irish exports, supporting companies to start and scale in new markets and creating jobs here at home.”
A wide diversity of cutting-edge technologies will be on display at the Ireland Pavilion including artificial intelligence and machine learning for voice commerce, cyber safety software to protect children online, radio signalling and small cell networks for on-board aircraft and rail Wi-Fi, secure connectivity for off-shore wind farms and remote diagnostics to check the health of your Smartphone at home.
