Interview with Tristan O’Gorman who will be speaking at Beyond IoT 2020 will take place on the 20th and 21st of January in the Cork Institute of Technology. See our preview of the event here.

Short pitch for what you are doing now?

Currently, I am working on two major initiatives within the Maximo portfolio in IBM. Firstly, putting the power of AI and predictive maintenance into the hands of our customers to reduce uncertainty about the condition of their critical assets and anticipate conditions which might lead to failure to improve asset uptime, increase productivity, and ensure the safety of their personnel.

Secondly, we are working on solutions for the technician of the future through modernization of our work management capabilities and the infusion of AI into work processes so that our technicians are equipped with the right information and guidance, in the right place, at the right time.

How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?

Last year was really productive. We laid the foundations of several projects that will bear fruition in 2020, which is exciting. We are seeing increased literacy in our ecosystem around AI and are starting to see the benefits of the technology being recognized and realized. I would’ve liked to see more progress in the area of inter and intra-sector collaboration around model research and development, particularly working with manufacturers of the assets that our clients manage. Hopefully 2020 will see the platforms needed to enable that type of collaboration into the future.

What are your plans for the future?

Working in this area, you need to be excited about solving problems, and thankfully there are many problems yet to solve! Helping clients solve the perpetual problem of poor data quality will be a focus of mine, as will the research and development of new algorithms and models for predictive maintenance. I will also be looking at ways to bridge the data science gap to help more clients get started with data-driven predictive maintenance.

Beyond IoT insights with Tristan O’Gorman

What will you be talking about at this event?

I will be talking about where enterprise asset management stands today, the challenges that our clients face and the opportunities that technologies like AI and Internet of Things can offer.

What inspired you to attend it?

I’m aware of the work that the Nimbus Research Center at CIT do and have been impressed to date. Also, as Ireland’s premier IoT conference, the opportunity to discuss about the work that we do at IBM Watson IoT was very compelling. Hopefully attendees will learn from what we are doing, and I hope to come away from the conference knowing a lot more about the space and the state-of-the-art work being done by attendees and speakers.

Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?

In the area of AI, I like the writings of Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig, and I’m looking forward to the latest edition of their classic textbook on AI, due early next year, I believe. I am also a big consumer of podcasts, and there are some terrific ones in the areas of AI and Data Science such as Data Skeptic, Artificial Intelligence with Lex Fridman, TWIML AI, Chai Time Data Science, Linear Digressions, and Towards Data Science.

How can people find out more about what you are working on?

Mostly I am on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/tristanogorman
