Engineering Excellence: Engineers Encouraged to Showcase Skills in New 5 Part Video Series

Engineering Excellence series will showcase inspirational engineering talent.

Ireland’s engineering community is being called upon to feature in a new online video series, the Engineering Excellence Digital Series, which is set recognise excellence in the engineering sector and the positive impact that engineers have made to society.

John Power, President of Engineers Ireland said: “The Engineering Excellence Digital Series aims to showcase the diversity of the profession and the many ways engineers are vital to delivering creative and sustainable solutions for modern society. In association with our title sponsor ESB, we look forward to profiling engineering initiatives which have had the greatest impact on Irish society and engineers who have demonstrated excellence and visionary leadership”.

The Engineering Excellence Digital Series, held in association with ESB and produced by Engineers Ireland, aims to showcase the endeavour, impact, and inspirational nature of Ireland’s engineering talent. With the third series now in development, the professional membership body and Ireland’s foremost energy company are now calling on engineering professionals and their organisations to submit their top project work of 2022 for their opportunity to feature in the new five-part video series.

Innovative, inclusive, and sustainable engineering

Bevin Cody, Corporate Reputation Manager at ESB said: “We are proud to support the Engineering Excellence Digital Series as it strives to celebrate Ireland’s inspiring engineering talent. Innovative, inclusive, and sustainable engineering solutions are central to the delivery of our strategic goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2040 by putting in place infrastructure and services to enable our customers and broader society to live more sustainably.

“We encourage engineering organisations across Ireland to put forward their people and projects to feature in this year’s series and to join us in celebrating Ireland’s rich and diverse engineering talent,” Ms Cody added.

Engineering professionals and organisations can now submit their projects and achievements into five video categories using a short application form which can be found on Engineers Ireland’s website. The categories are

Engineering Sustainability

This category will recognise an engineering project which is working to ensure the quality of our future through innovative practices. This category will champion an engineering project or initiative which has embraced the core pillars of sustainability and delivered a sustainable solution which will benefit the local environment and/or wider society.

Engineering Innovation

This category will recognise innovation developed and delivered by Ireland’s engineers. The engineering project selected to represent this category will have created the greatest impact on Irish society over the past 12 months, whether that is through its ambition, purpose, complexity, or contribution to a community. For example, innovative initiatives entered may refer to digital innovation including industry 4.0, manufacturing and medtech developments and innovations related to sustainability and climate action.

Engineering Infrastructure

Infrastructure provides the backbone of our society. This category will champion an infrastructure project of regional or national significance, such as transport infrastructure i.e., roads, bridges, railways, public realms, greenways, airports or ports or utilities infrastructure for example water, gas, electricity, or communications utilities.

Buildings and Structures

This category will recognise the role of Ireland’s engineering community in the development and protection of buildings and structures of national and regional significance. The project selected to represent this category may include a new building or structure which has been developed, or a conversation, preservation or restoration project on a building or location of historic importance.

Engineer of the Year

This category will recognise an engineer from the broad range of engineering fields who has demonstrated excellence, visionary leadership, and influence. The engineer, whether a Chartered Engineer or a Fellow of the profession, will have made a significant positive impact and contribution to an organisation, the engineering community or society.

The projects and engineering professional who demonstrates great endeavour and inspiration will be invited to take part in the 2022 Engineering Excellence Digital Series, held in association with ESB. Each project selected to feature in the series will also be shortlisted for the Engineering Endeavour of 2022 Award, the winner of which will be decided by a public vote in December.

Calling on participation by Ireland’s engineering community, Damien Owens, Interim Director General of Engineers Ireland, said: “The challenges we face as a society all require and benefit from engineering innovation. In our new five-part video series, we intend to showcase the achievements of our engineers and exceptional engineering projects to a wide audience and we invite Ireland’s engineering community to get involved”

“We are looking for examples of projects that highlight the energy, creativity, and expertise of engineers in a range of settings. That work could be developing solutions to support Ireland’s sustainability goals, infrastructure, or buildings projects to support communities or innovative projects that will have a longstanding and positive impact on society. We want to shine a light on the role of engineers in our community and we look forward to receiving entries from all engineering disciplines,” Mr Owens added.
