Dublin Bus unvieils 90 new high-tech buses

Earlier today Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donhoe TD, officially unveiled 90 new state of the art double decker buses which will operate on various routes across Dublin.
Minister Donhoe said “The delivery of 90 new vehicles, equipped with a range of enhanced features, will provide greater comfort and convenience for Dublin Bus customers and will contribute to providing a more sustainable mode of transport, particularly for commuting purposes.”

The new buses feature free wi-fi and increased safety features as well as bilingual passenger information signs in both the upper and lower saloons announcing the next bus stop. The buses also have dedicated spaces for buggies, separate wheelchair spaces, a CCTV monitor that allows passengers to see available space on the upper deck, 12 security cameras and signs announcing the next stop.

The SG model buses were manufactured by Volvo Bus Corporation, Sweden, and the Wrights Group, Ballymeana, Co Antrim. According to Dublin Bus the new buses are more environmentally friendly, consume less fuel and are quieter.

With Dublin Bus confirming that free Wi-Fi is now a mainstay on all their current buses, its great to see that public transport is getting a service that is no longer seen as a luxury. With Irish Rail offering free Wi-Fi on all its trains,  and also Bus Eireann offering free Wi-Fi on all their buses, only the Luas is yet to offer it. Four years ago it was announced that the Luas were to shortly offer Wi-Fi but that has yet to happen. If Bus Eireann, Dublin Bus and Irish Rail can offer free Wi-Fi why can’t the Luas?.
